This girl isn't big at all. 125-130 pounds from what she said (usually 115 or so) and is 5'8" max, maybe an inch shorter. She thinks she's fat cause she has some meat around the stomach she is used to being really skinny. Is there just some basic things she can do that doesn't involve the gym? She purely wants to burn fat, ZERO desire for muscle. Can you nice women of this forum recommend some ideas? I was thinking of things that may be fun to do such as riding a bike, using a workout video game, things of that nature. I'm cleaning up her diet, but she does want to do some exercises. Can't run or jog, allergies affect that.

The cardio should help her out but the cleaning eating is key for the abs. Also tell her to do push-ups( which can help core strength) at home, riding a bike just anything to keep her moving to we're she is burning more than consuming. Just don't forget abs are made in the kitchen.

pretty much any body weight routine done with speed would be helpful

any stairs in the house? I do stair "sprints" when I'm bored at home
prisoner squats, push ups, mountain climbers,

tons of stuff that can be done at home.. even one of the beach body home workouts can be good for her goals

^^ What they said. Or maybe get a copy of P90X or Insanity. There are lots of great plyometrics activities and such that don't require a gym.

Just a clarification on 'muscle' -- she wants zero muscle -- in fact there is no such thing as "toning". It matters more about body composition - you're made up of bones, lean muscle mass, bodyfat and water (for the most part). Bone mass is static for your average adult. Water weight fluctuates w/ your daily activities. The remainder of "how you look" is made up of the ratio of lean muscle mass to bodyfat. if you do nothing but drop fat, that means you're most likely going catabolic and losing muscle. Then you end up skinny fat - the illustration of the extreme is a long distance runner. And you can still have an unexpectedly high bodyfat measure. You can also reduce the bodyfat measure by increasing muscle mass. More muscle will also make whatever fat you have, look better.

Anyway - just going off on my usual rant about women who are scared of "muscle". I get what she's probably looking for but in reality, I want to point out the importance of at least maintaining muscle mass, if not increasing it as more muscle will improve the metabolic rate the body establishes for fat burning. Focusing just on "burning fat" like w/ a lot of cardio, you're going to give up muscle mass -for women that is just not a good thing. At the very least, its a guarantee for "mom arms" when you hit your 40s.
