World of Warcraft

WoW is $20 and I think it includes the first month. So you can play WoW for 3 months for $50 and decide if you want to cancel it then.

I'm pretty sure you can buy a 1 week WoW trial for $1 at EB Games, I know you can in SC.

Sounds like a crack dealer, "The first one's free!"

Try Drug Wars - Underworld, you can learn what it's like to be God Hand or Kenwoods future self...

Actually Blizzard is giving away the game for a one month trial and you get 15 days of playtime for free.

The cost is next to nothing, but when youre already playing other MMORPGs, it adds up. For me it would be $30 a month cuz I play CoV/CoH. Ive already got other expenses that automatically deduct every month too like XM radio, AOL, high speed internet. That shit adds up.

Then on top of it all, you have to buy the game. Who knows, I might just do it.

I've been playing WoW on and off for over a year now. I can tell you, I have a love/hate relationship with it. Proceed with caution. It may be the most excellently crafted game I have ever played. It is a beautiful work of art, it's brilliantly designed for both the gamer and the developer, and is easily the most addictive game (or anything for that matter) that I have ever played. It CAN ruin your life. It is so easy to get lost into this world that you neglect working out, socializing, doing chores, working, everything. I've seen it happen, and I've experienced it enough to know. Tit has actually failed classes because goddangit she's gotta finish this raid she's in, she's almost level 60, and her Beaststalker helmet might drop this time (it still hasn't)! At a certain point in order to get anything done in the game, you have to invest a minimum of 6 hours a day. Goodbye sex life, hellooooooooo 4 am Scholomance runs! And that's 4 am at night, not 4 am in the morning. I have seen it take over lots of people's lives, both in real life and on boards. I've read stories of people losing their jobs even because of this thing. The reward system is addicting cuz it works as a random interval format, like a slot machine- you invest money/time into it and you get a random chance of getting more money/phat loot. In this case, instead of gambling a quarter after a quarter, you're investing 5-6 hour increments after 5-6 hour increments, and then the item you want may or may not drop off of the boss at the end. That adds up to a loooooooot of wasted life.

That said, it's an amazing game. If you can manage your time with it, there's a great experience to be had. It's greatest flaw is in its very nature of being an online community. In a singler player game, it's ok for the developers to give you the strongest sword and the coolest powers and the badassest armor- there's only one person to please and you might as well give it to him. It doesn't have to be THAT hard to get because who's going to complain, Sephiroth? omgroflol /endgeekdom

But in an online world you can't give everyone the coolest gadgets, or else there's little to differentiate between the l33t players (which, lets face it, are going to be driven to this kind of game) and the casual gamers who can't 4-man Onyxia. Some people have, practically, dedicated their life to this game (at least their present life) and they have giant ass swords twice my height that summons lightening wherever they walk. Is it impressive? Yes. Am I envious? Yes. Do I want to do what it takes to achieve that sword? Hells no. Then this creates a kind of heirarchy among the l33t and the rest of us, and some people get very much looked down upon because we can't keep the pace cuz we actually do get laid in real life. (As a side note, these dudes with the giant swords really do get the online babes. ~weird) Therefore, you actually get some "nerditude" from other players, and it's very hard to find decent people that you can get along with. Why waste all this time and energy and money dealing with a-holes when you can just go play a single player game, get the cool sword and win the chick in the end, and more importantly, at your liesure. In a mmorpg, you're time schedule is pretty set in stone because you are playing with other people- there is no pause button. So time management, again, becomes very difficult.

Still the game is awesome. Eventually you will meet some decent folk in an overall assholic community and become really good friends with them. It's $15 a month to play, I think you get a free month when you buy it, and its well worth it. For a while it truly did dominate everything we did. Nowadays I can pick it up and play when I have some free time, but usually I can find other things to do if I think WoW will just take too much time. So, I highly recommend it as a truly memorable and fun experience, but be careful.

Hmm, I am not sure as to what you mean by the "single player game." Is there one? I thought there wasnt.. How cool is the game when you first start out? I was thinking about cancelling CoV and getting this instead.

CoV/CoH becomes bor-fuck-ing. Same moves over and over. Not many team invites after you hit the 30 levels. Id say the coolest part is making your hero/villain.

I meant single player games as in other games that are not mmorpgs. Just kinda comparing them to explain where WoW is different than what most people have experienced in a game.

First playing the game is really cool. The worst part is really the mid game, when leveling beings to slow down, you might not know too many people yet, the loot isn't uber yet, and mobs are still w00ping you. Once you're high level you'll either love it or hate it. If you get in a guild where you go on 40 man raids together and kill the biggest bosses then you'll get the most out of it, otherwise you'll find little to do but roll a new character.

Are the bosses the same or do they change? Don't you learn a skill as well? Is it like Diablo?

you guys are just leading me into a trap until I say something extremely geeky so everyone can get a good laugh. Well haha, good try! Not going to get me, no way!

Anyway, no it's nothing like Diablo. This game is a simulated world, not a series of levels and the characters are a lot more customizable. You learn new spells and skills all the way up to level 60, and by the end of it all your screen will be littered with buttons for all your different abilities. The bosses depend on what instance, or dungeon, you're in and they change very much depending on where you are and what level you are. The lower level instances take about 5 people to beat them (once you're high enough level you COULD do them by yourself if you wanted to, but by then there's better loot for you other places) and the bosses are like hydras or clan leaders or something. By level 60 it can take 40 people to kill the bosses, from a towering lava monster to a giant onyx dragon. Good stuff, and even with 40 people I've seen plenty of groups fail to kill them.

That sounds awesome.

that was brilliant! :clapping:

I haven't checked in a long time, but if you type /played it tells you the total amount of time that you have been playing a particular character. My lvl 60 undead warlock in 6/8 dreadmist (the only 6 that matters) whenever it was I last checked has been played for a total of over 2 1/2 months. That doesn't mean I've been playing for 2 months, it means every hour that I have played that character has summed up to 2 months worth of time. 2 months X 30 days X 24 hours is how many hours I've played the stinking warlock. Do I have anything to show for it? NO because dreadmist armor is kid stuff compared to what most people have, and their crap takes even longer to acheive.

edit: I just checked, it's actually only 27 days. Tit's character is up to 41 days cuz she was at home while I worked this past summer. Between the 2 of us we have 2 months, maybe that's what I was thinking. We have other characters, but those are the longest character we've played

Lightweight. I don't have time right now but I'm gonna log onto my character later and tell you how many hours I've put into it. :nerd: I will be crowned the ultimate nerd o' the board

Hey 3 days playing with a 10 + hour workday, 22 hours is about as much as humanly possible (with sleep that is). I'll put 30 in this weekend no problem.

tit has failed classes b/c of that game, there are lots of reports of people losing their job/relationship/education b/c of that game. Seriously, get rid of it

Luciddreamer: Elune server, Alliance, 57 Rogue, 21 days, 18 hours, 28 min
Chronax: Elune server, Horde, 60 Warlock, 27 days, 16 hours, 1 min

Titanya's character, Titanya: 70 hunter, 50 days, 14 hours, 45 mins

(keep in mind this is over 3 years)

Seriously, can u imagine what I could have done with those lost hours? I could have learned to play guitar, written a book, be HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE. Sure we've said we were going to quit lots of times, we put it down for like 3 months once, but we always get sucked back in. Listen to me: Put it down and never look back. Trust me.

LOL. Sucks for you!

I'll be fine. I'm not some self loathing emo jerkoff that needs to "escape" by living in an online fantasy world. The game is cool, but you have to seriously re-evaluate your worth as a human if you allow yourself to do shit like that. Seriously.

I played Age Of Empires. I played all day, every day ... for weeks at a time over several years. I made good money in business and had other people doing all the heavy lifting so it didn't put me in the streets, but I could have done much with that time. I sooooo enjoyed playing that game though. I was playing it on 911 matter of fact. I had my 61" Toshiba positioned so that I could watch TV while I was on the internet, but didn't notice the towers fall .. until AFTER I came out if the game I was in.

If I even touched a game like WoW my life would end. It would suck me in and I'd be ruined ... so I've never bought the game.

I didn't mean for it to come out that harsh. My point is, it is our duty as responsible human beings not to allow things as petty as a video game control our lives. I've been through a good deal for a 27 year old, and if I had let certain things consume me (the loss of my parents as a teen, getting kicked out of college, blowing through a few 100k on partying and drugs over a few year period, battling severe depression during that time, etc..) I wouldn't be here today.

I've put myself through too much to allow a video game to ruin me.

Is it fun? Hell yeah.

Would I rather do that all day and night instead of working or doing anything else for that matter? Hell yeah! But that's just not an option.
