So I need to do a quick back-up. I need to find and copy all the contact, favorite sites and internet history, and any and all media file ext's, all voip info, irc, aim, and all the email info I can find.

Would it be faster to mirror the hard drive? Time is an issue ...

Yeah I ghost the drive because 99% of the time I'll forget something...

Last time I did it was an 80GB drive, that took about 1 and a half hrs...if memory serves that is...

Uggg ... too much time. I'm back to looking for all non-program files and trying to save them instead. If that makes any sense ...

Someone I saw somewhere had a program that finds all those types of files for archival purposes.

ntbackup - system state or custom backup?

Custom back-up would be my guess ... so I can specify what type of files I want to search and back-up. SO like if I want to look at for all media files on the hard drive like porn ... then the program will know to look for ANY ext that would possibly be media file related to porn. Still images and video alike ... cuz I do not know what all the various file ext's are. There are only about a zillion media file ext's now ...

Just search for *gay*porn*.mpg and backup all of those files. And you're set. :thumb:

When I move a client to a new hard drive, I burn everything on the old hard drive to DVD. All too often, something gets missed.

You've already been helpful in other ways and I just wanna take a sec to say thanks for that. Aaaaaand I gotta say thanks for your help on this one BigDyl ... it's good to know I can count on you to help out with the needs of the gay community (I didn't know you were down with that). It's always helpful to have a resource ... if I ever work on a fags computer I'll PM you for details on how to find gay porn. :thumb:

I still need to find certain types of files though as I do the back-up ... or after the back-up is complete and I have a copy of the hard drive. I must find all of his contact, favorite sites and internet history, any and all media files, all VOIP info, IRC, AIM, and all the email info I can find including sent files. All the passwords need to be figured out too ...

Copy all the files from these folders

C:\Document & Settings\<username>\My Documents
C:\Document & Settings\<username>\Desktop
C:\Document & Settings\<username>\Favorites
C:\Document & Settings\<username>\Application Data

Check the root of the C drive for any folders there.

Also check the C:\Program Files\ directory for any folders to save there.

You don't keep your porn in at least 3 or 4 different places? I do, I mean I keep my old tax files in at least 2, but my porn gets stored to at least 3....:hehe:

While testing out Media Catalog Studio 5.4 I found out I had more porn than I thought ... glad my son had no surprises for me. He seems to like brunettes. He's 19 so I guess I'll just pretend I didn't find that.

That program is good for finding and deleting, but not so good for logging or copying what you find.

Windows search can scan for all media files too if you specify, it can also search for documents, spreadsheets etc...

When I change my drives I also go in and change my address book and saved emails to .pst files and save them to DVD's.....I have emails from 1998....

But what ext's do you look for to find the emails?

I've been on yahoo since the stone age and have never not one single time used any email client like Outlook Express for my personal stuff. Work related tasks ... yes I have but I've never cared to look for them so I've no idea what to look for or where to find it.

On my PC Outlook stores the data files as outlook.pst

If you don't use Outlook then there is no need to worry about it...

If you use yahoo then I would save my emails from there onto disk every so often in case they lose your data...

Thanks Manic ... pst and wab. Imma look them up in a sec. Waiting for acronis to do its thing ...
