Some Target Stores Change Duties for Muslim Cashiers Who Object to Ringing Up Pork

MINNEAPOLIS ??? Muslim cashiers at some local Target stores who object to ringing up products that contain pork are being shifted to other positions, the national retailer said Saturday.

Some Muslim cashiers had declined to scan products such as bacon because doing so would conflict with their religious beliefs. They would ask other cashiers to ring up such purchases, or some customers scanned the items themselves.

Minneapolis-based Target Corp. has offered the cashiers the option of wearing gloves, shifting to other positions or transferring to other stores.

"We are confident that this is a reasonable solution for our guests and team members," Target spokeswoman Paula Thornton-Greear said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Islam teaches that eating pork is forbidden, and some Muslims feel selling or handling pork is also forbidden because it would make them complicit in the sins of others.

Greear said the situation was a local problem only.

"It is not an issue in most of our stores in the Twin Cities," she said in separate comments via e-mail. "There is also no indication that this is an issue in the Minnesota market overall or nationwide."

As the local Muslim population grows, fueled by immigration from East African countries such as Somalia, efforts by Muslims to live by the rules of their faith often conflict with American realities.

In one dispute, some Muslim cab drivers who serve Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport refuse to take passengers who are carrying alcohol. The Metropolitan Airports Commission is expected to vote in April on a proposal that would hand out 30-day license suspensions to cabbies who refuse service for any reason.

Suhara Robla, who works at a SuperTarget, told the Star Tribune newspaper that more than a dozen Muslim cashiers were asked Thursday to do other jobs.

"They told all of us who don't touch pork to go to the sales floor," she told the newspaper. "They really didn't say why. They just said it was a new policy."

If they work for a store that sells pork products period then they are complicit in helping others sin, their paychecks are partially profits of those sells of pork. Sounds like typical religious hypocrisy to me...

That's what I was about to say. It's not okay to ring it up, but it's ok to work in a store that sells it:hmmm: ?

Sure. I think a cab driver should be reserved the right to deny service to anyone they please. For the matter, I think any private business should be allowed to decide who they provide service to as long as they don't receive government subsidized money.

deny service is a polite way of saying discriminate. so when the cab drivers refuse drunk people, how is a responsible person supposed to get home without driving when intoxicated??

That isn't the cab drivers responsibility. It is the drunk person's fualt for being drunk with no DD.

I am sure cab drivers are sick and tired of drunks puking in their cab and every other issue that goes along with transporting a drunk.

Where I live, in the U.K, the local Muslims were complaining at Christmas about our town Crimbo decorations, they said that they insult their religion.....What a bunch of pricks, if I said something like that in their shithole contry I'd be beheaded and fead to the pigs..... Things like this realy wind me up!

Peace, lol.

Morons...letting religion run their lives for them.

OP, Mickey,

Can you put up a link.

Thanks. :kissu:

Haha yea, that made me laugh when I heard. Immigrating to a traditionally Christian country then complaining about something harmless.

But of course, here in the UK, we were afraid of causing controversy so many counties abandoned tradition, all because of a few non-sensical complaints.

Wonder if Catholics have issues selling condoms to regular people?

Fire them! If they are so devout, they should go find a different job that doesn't conflict with their dumb fucking religion.

LMAO. We agree. Beer time!

6 of us took a cab(Van) Saturday night bar hopping and the cab driver told us we could bring beer. He was cool as hell. We tipped him well too!

You can't fire them due to PR probs.

You need make them quit....they don't want to touch pork, they can touch toilets.

that should work:paddle:

I hear this happens a lot. I'll admit, I'm guilty of doing it once :barf: .
