I have been lifting weights for about a year now(seriously), and I have only had a good pump 10-15 times. I am really confused about how to start/keep a pump going throughout my entire workout. When the pump stops does that mean I need to stop lifting weights or what? Could someone fill me in on blood pump just everything you know about it.

Don't worry about "the pump", just worry about about how your workout load is increasing. For example, are your weights going up?

Like DOMS said, the pump is nothing... sure, it feels good if you have it, but its not necessary for working out.

Sometimes I get a good pump, sometimes I dont.. yet my progress over nearly 4 years of lifting has been nice and steady :)

If you want to keep a 'pumped' feeling, I'd suggest keeping your RIs low (try 60 sec maximum) and make sure your not standing round for minutes waiting for your next set.

But like I said, pump doesn't actaully mean anything, as long as you progess to then next level, you're doing things right

Alright, and yea there are certain workouts where I take 2 1/2 minute breaks like on deadlifts. I'll start trying to take shorter RI's. Thanks for the replies.

I get a pretty massive pump going when I'm brushing my teeth, but otherwise generally not so much, I mention this because I rarely get much of a pump during a workout. You pretty much just have to stay busy to maintain the pump, seems like faster movements are more likely to get a pump going and working out in the heat (80+ degrees or so).

:roflmao: Dude, do you have any enamel left on those teeth?

as has been said, pump means nothing unless you believe Arnold

Or unless you ARE Arnold :D

I don't brush hard, just fast motions, I've always just found it ironic that this particular thing causes me to get a pump going when generally exercise does not. I think the fact my arm is raised while I'm brushing my teeth has a lot to do with it too.

Not necessarily ironic Dan. What rep range do you work out with? I bet if you drop the weights and up the reps to 15-20 you will see much more pump than with heavy weight and lower reps. This is exactly the reason why the pump does not mean much, otherwise everyone would do 50reps in the gym daily.

Holy shit! I thought you were joking about getting a pump form brushing your teeth?! lol

You should brush your teeth before you go the gym :D
