Machida would make Tito look silly. There's no way Tito is taking this fight.Posted by MMA Junkie on January 5, 2008 at 6:17 pm ET
Just hours after MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com) reported an apparent offer to Heath Herring for a fight with Cheick Kongo, the news comes out that undefeated UFC light heavyweight Lyoto Machida (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has been offered a fight with former UFC champ Tito Ortiz (15-5-1 MMA, 14-5-1 UFC).
Ed Soares, the manager for Machida, today told MMAWeekly.com that his fighter had been offered a fight with Ortiz ??? yes, they???ve accepted ??? and that they???re simply awaiting word on whether Ortiz has accepted the fight.
There was no mention of a possible fight date.
Just a week ago, Machida posted a UFC 79 victory by dominating UFC newcomer and former PRIDE standout Rameau Sokoudjo. Using his usual counter-striking style while peppering his opponent with head and leg kicks, Machida shut down Sokoudjo and scored a second-round submission victory.
It was his 12th straight win, including his fourth straight in the UFC.
Ortiz, a 10-year veteran of the UFC and a former light heavyweight champion, recently finished taping ???The Celebrity Apprentice??? with Donald Trump. The reality/game show debuted this week and airs each Thursday on NBC for the next three months.
Ortiz recently stated that he has one fight left on his current deal but that he???s negotiating directly with UFC co-owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta ??? not UFC President Dana White ??? for a new contract.
A new deal would most likely need to be in place before the fight with Machida becomes official.
Ortiz hasn???t competed in the UFC since a July UFC 73 draw with Rashad Evans.

???The Ultimate Fighter 2??? welterweight runner-up Luke Cummo (6-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) will meet UFC veteran Luigi Fioravanti (11-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) at UFC 82 ??? an event that takes place March 1 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Cummo posted the news on his official website early Monday morning, and MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com) recently confirmed the bout.
The welterweight fight will likely take place on the undercard of UFC 82, which features a main-event title fight between UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva and PRIDE champ Dan Henderson.
Since dropping a unanimous decision to Joe Stevenson at The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale in November 2005, Cummo has gone 3-1 in the UFC, which has included recent back-to-back knockout victories over Josh Haynes and Ediberto de Oliveira. Cummo displayed a much-improved stand-up game in the victories, posting knockout victories for the first time in four years.
(More information about Cummo???s UFC 82 preparations can be found in Ken Pavia???s ???Living with Luke??? feature here on MMAjunkie.com.)
Fioravanti, part of the famed American Top Team, recently snapped a two-fight losing streak with a first-round TKO of Frank Camacho (2-1) at a Pacific X-treme Combat event in Guam. Prior to the victory, he suffered losses to two very tough UFC opponents: Jon Fitch (via second-round submission at UFC 68) and Forrest Petz (via unanimous decision to UFC Fight Night 10).
Fioravanti owns UFC victories over Solomon Hutcherson (The Ultimate Fighter 3 Finale) and Dave Menne (UFC Fight Night 7).

Stephan Bonnar (11-4) and Matt Hamill (3-1) could possibly fight during an upcoming UFC Fight Night SpikeTV special on April 2, according to the MMAWeekly.com rumors section.
It???s slated for the same show that will feature the lightweight showdown between Kenny Florian and Joe Lauzon as the main event.
Light heavyweights Bonnar and Hamill are both former contestants on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) who have large fan followings thanks in large part to their participation on the mixed martial arts (MMA) reality series.
In fact, Bonnar is credited as half of the reason the UFC is currently so popular for his epic three-round war (a loss) with Forrest Griffin at the conclusion of the original TUF. He has had some issues outside of the Octagon since that time, but has returned to rattle off two straight wins.
Hamill is also perhaps best known for a loss, which came at UFC 75: ???Champion vs. Champion??? against local product, Michael Bisping. It???s safe to say that it was the most controversial decision in the short history of the promotion.
He was supposed to get an immediate rematch; however, Bisping decided to move down to middleweight after sustaining the first loss of his career to Rashad Evans during the main event at UFC 78: ???Validation??? in November while Hamill recovered from knee surgery.
If it comes about this is a tough fight for Bonnar because he struggled mightily to defend the takedown against Rashad Evans back in 2006. Evans is a sound wrestler and a case can be made that Hamill is even better.
We shall see.
Any of you guys have some hopeful match ups this year?
The biggest thing I am looking forward to in '08 are any of the top 10 LW's against eachother.
I'd also like to see GSP against any top tier fighter.
I want to see Florian get a title shot.
Liddell/Wanderlei vs. Houston Alexander
Sylvia vs. Kongo
GSP vs. Serra II
a few more I can't think of.
I definitely want to see Houston fight again, maybe a fight that goes to round 2 this time. A Houston Alexander vs. Thierry Sokoudjou would be interesting. Both their big time fight careers are very similar.
