Bush Says Creation 'Not Incompatible' With Evolution - FOXNews.com Transition Tracker

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush said his belief that God created the world is not incompatible with the scientific theory of evolution.

In an interview with ABC's "Nightline" on Monday, the president also said he probably is not a literalist when reading the Bible although an individual can learn a great deal from it, including the New Testament teaching that God sent his only son.

Asked about creation and evolution, Bush said: "I think you can have both. I think evolution can -- you're getting me way out of my lane here. I'm just a simple president. But it's, I think that God created the earth, created the world; I think the creation of the world is so mysterious it requires something as large as an almighty and I don't think it's incompatible with the scientific proof that there is evolution."

He added, "I happen to believe that evolution doesn't fully explain the mystery of life."

Interviewer Cynthia McFadden asked Bush if the Bible was literally true.

"You know. Probably not. ... No, I'm not a literalist, but I think you can learn a lot from it, but I do think that the New Testament for example is ... has got ... You know, the important lesson is 'God sent a son,"' Bush said.

"It is hard for me to justify or prove the mystery of the Almighty in my life," he said. "All I can just tell you is that I got back into religion and I quit drinking shortly thereafter and I asked for help. ... I was a one-step program guy."

The president also said that he prays to the same God as those with different religious beliefs.

"I do believe there is an almighty that is broad and big enough and loving enough that can encompass a lot of people," Bush said.

When asked whether he thought he would have become president had it not been for his faith, Bush said: "I don't know; it's hard to tell. I do know that I would have been -- I'm pretty confident I would have been a pretty selfish person."

Bush said he is often asked whether he thinks he was chosen by God to be president.

"I just, I can't go there," he said. "I'm not that confident in knowing, you know, the Almighty, to be able to say, Yeah, God wanted me of all the other people."

He also said the decision to go to war in Iraq was not connected to his religious believes.
"I did it based upon the need to protect the American people from harm," Bush said.

"You can't look at the decision to go into Iraq apart from, you know, what happened on Sept. 11. It was not a religious decision," he said. "I don't view this as a war of religion. I view this as a war of good, decent people of all faiths against people who murder innocent people to achieve a political objective."

He said he felt like God was with him as he made big decisions, but that the decisions were his.
"George W. Bush has to make these decisions."

Simple is an understatement! B.S., if jesus was around, they would have ridiculed him, and called him a liberal pacifist!

:roflmao:

Jesus would be hated by many of his current followers.

You ever see that bumper sticker?
"Lord Jesus, please save us from your followers!"

I'd like to blow some lines with ol Georgie and then get the real scoop about how he feels about religion.....

It's not a cut & dry as you say. Everybody wants peace, but "peace through strength" is a motto I believe in. Turning the other cheek to terrorists doesn't make sense. Fighting for the freedom of people is, in my opinion, noble.

No, Christians don't have it all right, but I believe a lot of it comes down to intent.

And that bumper sticker is not a bumper sticker of a Christian... it's ridicule, plain & simple.

It is extremely cut and dry. I spent the better part of 15 years going to church, youth church, bible school, and every other church oriented function you can imagine. I know how the bible depicted Jesus's life, which might be one of the few parts of the bible that I enjoyed. I like Jesus. Real or not, the guy was a beautiful soul.

You are delusional if you think Jesus would stand outside abortion clinics calling girls whores, saying on live television that god hates fags, throwing people in prison in Abu Ghraib with no due process or right to defend themsleves in court. Jesus doesn't think the US gets special treatment, that somehow God considers our one geographical location better than the rest. Jesus doesn't support your war on terror. Jesus would campaign for healthcare and food for the poor. Jesus was about love, compassion, and forgiveness.

The only people today that even come close to living Jesus's example are of another religion entirely. Meanwhile the modern day Christians in the US are... I'll just let that thought go, I think you get my point.

Yeah, me too...Then when I strangle him and beat him beyond recognition, I can say it was the drugs that drove me to temporary insanity...

Wow.. pretty insightful. Unlike you, I don't pretend to know what Jesus would say or do in any circumstance. "calling girls whores"... no, but I have a hard time believing he wouldn't object to abortion. "saying God hates fags"... no, but I have no idea what his take on homosexuality will be. "throwing people in Abu Ghraib"... I have no idea what Jesus' answer to dealing with people who want nothing more than to kill me. In my best judgement, locking them up & throwing away the key is the answer.

I try to do the best I can with what I've got. You can paint the modern Christian anyway you'd like, but you have no authority nor do you see things through my eyes or anyone else's. If I've lived my life wrong, God will tell me.. not you. God knows the man I'm trying to be & I want to be judged by Him, not someone half a world away who knows me only by political & religious rants.

Your time spent in church doesn't impress me. I went to Catholic kindergarten/pre-school, grammar school, high-school & college... but I didn't accept & embrace my Catholic faith until 2 years after college. Despite all that time in school & Church, I was clueless.

Jesus wasn't pro war,pro greed, abolishing human rights, anti gay. No, that is the Republican parties interpretation of his teachings. After all he was a community organizer, remember how they tried to belittle that!

My time in church isn't suppose to impress anyone. It doesn't even impress me, but I can see after rereading the post how it might come off as an appeal to higher authority. It wasn't my intention. What I meant was even though I am not religious, I am educated on the King James Bible.

problem is their is a difference between education and the ability to use it. in the book of timothy it states of those ever learning.....

truthfully I like your views on religion. some of it i don't agree with, but you do get to the heart of Christianity better than many Christians do.

I just kind of wish you were also able to see the Christians who actually live the teachings of Christ. They are not out there yelling whore in front of abortion clinics, but they are volunteering time and money to support organizations who try to reduce how often that decision is made.

Not all Christians go around yelling God hates fags. I don't ever remember posting anything similar to that. I think I try and be respectful to crazy enough's and Tallcalls posts while still expressing my view.

I do think that a geographical location can be more blessed than another however. The bible speaks of a land of milk and honey. he blesses the land of Israel and gives it to the posterity of Abraham. There is not a more hotly contested geographical region of the world throughout history than Jerusalem. There is absolutely a reason for that. It is a favored land.

And I do believe that God played a role in the creation of our country. It suited his purposes to have a land of freedom. newly established and able to break away from the histories of Europe, and Asia, or Africa in order to have a land where all 3 could mix.

Abu Ghraib has nothing to do with the Christian religion. Don't do that.

And bull shit about another religion coming closer than Christians to Christianity. For all of the wacko nut jobs Christianity has, we have 3 who live their lives following Christs teachings of loving one another and using compassion and charity in their dealings with their fellow man.

Xtians are nutters.

They can practice their religion and hold their beliefs but they shouldn't be in government, IMO.

Religions are well, religions. To each his own.. Will we ever know the truth if there is someone almighty as in God? Maybe but we do not really know anything right now. No one can say what "God" would want or do as they do not personally know him. Sure you can go off the bible and how it depicts God but to me that could not even be real who knows. It doesn't matter how much you know about the bible, hell you could be able to recite it word for word. The fact of the matter is that it's not 100%. Government should never ever be based off any religion. Government should be based off the people. Having arguments like this is completely pointless in my mind.

I didn't do that chop, that was from another forum.

you're cheating on us with another forum? you are our resident tranny. no one elses :paddle:

so if you are Christian you can't run for a government position? how about other religions? or does every government representative need to be an atheist? :bulb:

just out of curiousity, is that the one that a guy read in his hat that was printed on special tablets in indian that only he could read?

I know it is tough for you to comprehend things that you read, but try to keep up. timothy is in the new testament. If you are going to try and bash on the LDS church you're really going to have to try harder.

If you really feel like you know how to box step in the ring
