Basically im a gym rat, love working out since I was 18. Now a days I've started going out more and drinking heavily every fri and sat. I totally feel like shit and guilty when monday mourning comes, and it has really affected my progress at the gym. As in now its been 3 weeks without alcohol and I feel much better with my progress at the gym. My question to you guys is how many of you quit drinking because of the gym? I love the high drinking gives me but my fitness comes first period.

OK.... First off:

Professionals are told to times by 3 the amount admitted to.

Let's just stop there and wait for an update.

are you drunk? :)

I started training before I ever started drinking, and I never started drinking because I never wanted it to fuck with my training.

It's a vicious cycle see. I've been going to sober anonymous groups, but I just haven't been able to start drinking yet.

Drink like anybody else should - Sparingly.

Says the guy who was drinking budweiser and wild turkey all last night.

I cannot hold my liquor.

It's all about balance really. If you get into the routine of going out twice a week and getting really drunk then yeh its going to affect your training, if however you can keep it to just a couple times a month then the negative impact it will have on your training will be very low.

And of course you can always help yourself by drinking lots of water during and after a big session on the ole medicine :stuck:

I drink heavily and im always improving

The weirdest thing was when i went to spain for a week
Every day alot of drink, a class a drug (coke, speed, pills or mdma) in large amounts, weed, mostly not much good food, not much sleep, no exercize
And i came back with my biceps even bigger (slightly) and alot more defined(drug weight loss ftw) than when i left

If I didn't drink, there isn't a doubt in my mind that I would be in competitive bodybuilding shape year round.

My diet, training and supplementation would be perfect 24/7/365.

That said, going out and having a good time is a must for me.

i slowed down in the past year. once in a while i'll go out and get absolutely shitfaced. i dont drink to get "totally fucked up man!!" i drink just to get a nice buzz then smoke a blunt, and i'll be good. I hate being hungover, but i love being drunk haha.

I really think its difficult to be a gym rat and love to party. I had a blast for new years, lots of liquor on me but Next day I feel guilty because I know for a fact liquor just kills my gains.... Oh well, back to the gym.

alcohol is nasty... lol on new year's i drank some peppermint something 100proof haha wow threw up from it, im not supposed to have mint or alcohol and i had em both so yeah it kinda screwed me over hahaha (i have G.E.R.D.)

Alcohol may not appear to affect your training, but it does.... I have not made much progress for years because of it.

And by all this I mean the abuse of alcohol..... not a glass of beer and a couple (2x150ml) of glasses of wine each night.Abuse being, getting smashed with one or two bottles (75cls) of wine for instance, per night......

If you can keep the consumption down, ie to 'safe limits' then keep on drinking.......

Stopping totally is often not the best idea for those people with a real alcohol problem.(My personal opinion, as I took medication at the end of 2008 for 9 weeks to deal with the problem : the medication had some pretty frightening side effects of its own, though was totally effective in stopping me from drinking anything at all........)

I dont drink to get smashed, I drink a couple of beers at a club and one shot, just to get tipsy while im interacting with chicks and cracking jokes with friends. This been said i've seen this have some negative effect on my progress, and I only do this once a week, rarely two. People drink for different reason, me personally I detest the taste but at a club drinking is a must.

Certainly is a difficult balancing act which is very individual.

I only drink to get completely anihilated but when I do I regret it the next day. But I only do this once a month max. :D

But that would be a Saturday night, followed by 10 hours sleep, managing to crawl downstairs and swig down a handful of Neurofen and then back to bed for a few hours. :D

Usually would have a super early night and get up Monday feeling charged and motivated to hit the gym and work extra hard to clear out the last remains of the night I prolly want to forget. :)

i don't know if its true, but i heard that if you drink just a couple beers sometime it doesn't affect your training but if you drink too much or more than three it eliminate the protein that is still in your system and slowing your growth process.

You need to find some better substances to party on my friend. Weed, caffeine, and mushrooms all great party drugs if you can handle them.

Cool topic! ;)

The issue for me is that I gain fat when I drink regularly (6 beers a night or more) despite any training I may be doing, cardio and all... Funny because there isn't that many calories in one beer (around 100 for light ones and 200 for strong ones). Maybe the alcohol itself does additional black magic... ;)

its true that their is calories in the beer, but what i heard is that the alcohol with a lot of quantity or percentage, prohibit the protein to be absorbed by the cells and goes out without being used.So slowing down the healing process at the same time slowing growth.

ya but when people drink regularly they dont have 1 beer they have several and that 200 calories adds up quick six pack = 1200 calories and most of the people i know can handle more than that at a time.

I think it depends some on your age too. I am 20 years old and in college. I typically drink 2 days a week. Friday and Saturday nights are big drinking nights for me. When I say big I will probably drink anywhere from 6-12 beer and have 2 or 3 shots. Either way it is not healthy or beneficial but I have been doing this for a year or so and I still see gains in the gym and have not noticed and extra fat gain. I am sure I won't be able to do this forever, but hopefully once I am out of college I won't be in drinking situations every single weekend.

If your gonna drink do it really slowly, making you drink less naturally. Basically Training over alcohol anyday!

I feel the same way! Drinking in moderation, once a month max, is cool if you keep to that routine. I was a heavy drinker, every day half a bottle of tequila was my poison. I would never skip the gym but the gain in comparison to not drinking were minimal. I dont drink anymore becouse of it. I feel better and look better when alcohol is not involved stamina, strength, etc.......

Just my opinion among many:thumb:

Does hydrocodone and oxycodone adversly affect protein synthesis as bad as alcohol. Just wondering because I dont drink, but I do, well, you know...
