My friend ( that I just posted about in the anabolics thread, check my thread out in there if you're experienced in gear) said he has a hernia threat. His doctor noted a weak spot on his lower ab/groin area ( I guess, didn't really get into the exact location) He said it's not a hernia but it could be. He said it kinda runs in his family. He's lifting a little heavier now, on some gear. We were talking about belts and wondered if this would help or hinder. I figured if the spot is below the belt, which it is, the added pressure could make things worse, or hell, regardless of where it is the added pressure might make it worse?? He said his doc said just to continue and tread lightly and there's no way to tell if/when it will go fully herniated. Just trying to give some feedback to a decent guy I've befriended in the gym. Chime in if you got anything. Thanks

You figured correctly. I don't know why people think belts decrease the chance of hernias.

I tend to agree with your analogy but am far from an expert on that.

I trained with a hernia for years, both power lifting and body building. Used a belt for heavy squats and deads just like anyone probably would when power lifting. I really couldn't tell you it made a difference to me one way or another. I got it taken care of when it started bothering me. Because everyone is different, I would recommend to your friend to just keep doing what he's doing and if it becomes a problem, get it taken care of.
