The next question asked went as follows, "Governor Romney, it is true, is it not that you had four deferments from the Vietnam War? You have said before that you support war and the efforts of US military involvement overseas at all costs, yet you made sure you would never go to war yourself. What makes you think that veterans and those currently serving in the military think that you have their best interests at heart when you yourself weren't even interested in sacrificing your time, energy, or life for your nation at a time when it seemed most crucial?"

Romney responded:

"That's a good question, young man, and I would be happy to answer it. The Vietnam War came at a time in my life when I had other plans. I knew in my heart of hearts that I would one day serve my nation. That I would one day hold an office that would help not only our nation, but also the world. So I did what I could to make sure that I would be around to serve my nation, as well as serving God by teaching very important religious principles to a broader audience overseas. My father did not want me serving, and he convinced me that yes, I was too important to go to Vietnam. I had a greater purpose in life. I wasn't neglecting my nation, but rather preparing myself for a future of service."

An onlooker that seemingly was a Vietnam veteran shouted, "Fuck you, Romney! You wouldn't know service if it bit you on your well manicured ass."

Wow imagine being that prudish. God like I think they call it.

To which Romney responded, "Please don't be testy, my friend. I did what I did for you, and I thank you for your service as well." That same veteran responded, "You only served yourself, you jackass. You could've served your nation even if your draft number wasn't called? but you didn't? you chose to serve yourself instead. Thanks for revealing your true colors."

i didn't know coward was a color

oh yea, yellow.

I defense with Romney is my current defense in my situation. I served for over 10 years gave so much sacrifice to this war. A war that I have seen become effortless. We should never have been at this war for 10 years. As soon as we got Saddam we should have bailed out and had the CIA take over for the bin ladin hunt. I got out of the military because I was on my way to Afgan for 15 months then from there stationed in Sasebo to do mobile support for Afgan. WTF so basically back to back tours.

NO ONE SHOULD ever join the military unless they are willing to give their lives for their country. At one point I would have died for this country and what it stands for. As of right now I would die for my troops and family to protect them if I had to but would NEVER give my life for my country. Until this country pulls its head of out its ass I will keep my mind frame. Just as we should have never went to war with Vietnam. Screw the policy of containment. We have our own issues to worry about.

So by Romney not going to fight he might have saved the lives of many, any one that has served can vouch that the last person they want to be there shipmate, battle buddy or what ever is some one who does not want to be in the military. They only put their lives more at risk then good.

The question also could be did Clinton go to Vietnam or did he run? Where the hell was Obama when his country needed him? Studying socialism and communism? This election I am voting for Paul Ryan and if that means my vote goes for Mitt so be it any thing but Obama.

We should only go to war to defend out best interest and home land.

Golf Course in Kenya. GICH!!!

i'm starting to fear the comedians are going to all vote for Romney and Ryan cuz there's so much damned material there.

Well said Jay. I love my country but would never go to Vietnam or the middle east war.

By law you should only be able to run for president if you served in the military for 4 or more years. Bush had way too easy of a time sending our soldiers out there while Obama has left them there. Yes, I know Bush was in the guard, that 2 weekends a month bullshit shouldn't count. They should need to be fully enlisted.

i agree. seems it would make a man think very hard before commanding others to go.

me too. why enlist to get killed fighting undeclared wars that have nothing to do with protecting America.

Well done and much respect brother. Thank you.

I think you should at least at a minimum release your damn birth cert and have it verified by the other party. There is some thing VERY dark about Obama's past that makes me feel uncomfortable. I would rather a president that smoked weed and lied about inhaling and got head in the white house then this clown. I am a hardcore republican, but I have to say our last good president was clinton. I feel obama and bush are the same. Both were for massive government spending, just in different ways. Regan also turned our economy down as well with his lowering of tax.

When you look at the US history of depression or recession what got us out of it was loweing taxes which alloud businesses to hire more people and also aloud people spend more money. This whole raise taxes bull shit just doesnt add up.

Mit Romney could of felt to important to fight in Vietnam if he was taking some of that 'OLD SCHOOL ACID' or 'SMOKING GANGA'.......they were great days for getting 'FUCKED UP'...... :ohyeah:

There is a problem with that logic. That logic requires that the people at the top spend that money. They don't, they save it, which does nothing for the economy. If lowering taxes led to job creation Bush's tax cuts would have been a windfall. In reality, all they did was increase the deficit.

There is no reason why income taxes shouldn't be set at 20% with the standard deduction being the annual salary at minimum wage which is $17,600. Actually, there is plenty of reason. For the people that scam and manipulate the system like Romney this is a net tax increase and they won't let that happen. No to mention this would make the IRS more or less obsolete. I see no reason why someone who is an MD should be forced to pay 33% when he pays 13.6%. Also, if we stopped shoving our fat noses in to every other country's conflicts we may be able to save some money. One of the primary reasons we spend so much more than other militaries is because they know our dumb asses will pay for it. Look at what happened in Libya, we stepped back and other countries stepped in and took some of the burden. It would also be nice if people who were for limited gov't were actually for limited gov't. This includes gay marriage, abortion, etc. People don't want limited gov't, they just want gov't to stay out of their personal lives. If gov't gets involved in other people's lives most people are cool with that. Oh yeah, and i would be nice if people who complained about handouts would stop sticking their hand out.

Draft evasion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A total of 8.615 Million men served during the Vietnam era and of them 2.15 Million actually served in the Combat Zone so less than 540,000 draftees went to Vietnam. Three-fourths of those deployed were from working families and poor youths were twice as likely to serve there than their more affluent cohorts although the vast majority of them were volunteers.

it's pretty surprising so few were actually draftees.

Any of the world wars I would have. Stopping Germany and Russia were our only threats being a super power. Stopping Korea or Vietnam is just a political standpoint

LOL I hope you know that Russia was one of the Allies in WWII. The US has never gone to war against Russia.

I believe he was referencing the Cold War and the Russian involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis.

We all are bro, lol. Also, the US didn't stop the cold war, Russia did.

Of course Canadians are experts on US foreign policy, as the US's main trading partner, we are the country most effected by it.
