Russell Brand May Have Started a Revolution Last Night

The revolution itself may not be televised, but on last night's edition of the BBC's Newsnight, viewers may have witnessed the start of one.

NEWSNIGHT: Paxman vs Brand - full interview - YouTube

Actor-slash-comedian-slash-Messiah Russell Brand, in his capacity as guest editor of the New Statesman's just-published revolution-themed issue, was invited to explain to Jeremy Paxman why anyone should listen to a man who has never voted in his life.

"I don't get my authority from this preexisting paradigm which is quite narrow and only serves a few people," Russell responded. "I look elsewhere for alternatives that might be of service to humanity."

And with that, the first shots of Russell's revolutionary interview were fired.

Over the course of the following ten-or-so minutes, Brand and Paxo volleyed back and forth over subjects ranging from political apathy, to corporate greed, to gorgeous beards.

Throughout the interview, Brand repeatedly dodged Paxman's efforts to trivialize his message ? at one point Paxman literally called Brand a "very trivial man" ? until finally, even the entrenched newsman appeared to relent against the rushing tide of Brand's valid arguments.

After Brand reminded Paxman that he cried after learning that his grandma too had been "fucked over" by aristocrats, the Newsnight host was stunned into silence.

"If we can engage that feeling and change things, why wouldn't we?" Brand crescendoed. "Why is that naive? Why is that not my right because I'm an 'actor'? I've taken the right. I don't need the right from you. I don't need the right from anybody. I'm taking it."

Fantastic...Left me speechless...

He's a bit smarter than he looks.

He's a socialist but his ideas are surely worth people listening to and thinking about. He owned that interviewer.

I don't think he's a socialist at all. anybody who isn't a complete ideologue can clearly see that the political and economic systems specifically in the U.S and U.K are completely unsustainable.

no he isn't.

Did you hear him, he even so much as stated it. Regardless I respect his opinion and it's not a pissing match. The extremely high taxes, very limited profits and massive redistribution of wealth he hit on are quite socialistic in nature.

Yes I heard him from my standpoint, which is without any political party bias, and without labels.

Did u hear him?

I think his main point is the current system does not work, I don't know why everyone insists on labeling people "socialist" or anything else.

I agree with everything he said, the interviewer was a closed minded idiot.

I voted twice in my entire life and the second time I realized what a waste if time it was, of course the second time I voted I was college educated, which helped me see what a joke voting is.

Anti-elitist is far different than socialist. He understands that not everyone is equal, some people do try harder than others, but no one is so great that they and a select few others should hold more money than the whole of humanity combined. That we spent millennia fighting against monarchies, just to have them pop up again under a new guise of the ultra-entrepreneur. He realizes that the current political system on its face is just a drama played out to keep us complacent, but now the actors in that play have either become so cheapened by the payoff system that they barely pretend to be acting any longer, pretty soon they will be wearing suits with all the corporate sponsors patched onto it like Nascar drivers. Anybody who continues to vote for these lackeys is just as complicit because we all know the reality, and knowing is half the battle....

I voted once to keep George Jr out of the White House, when they let that fool have a second chance that was it for me. I realized most of those men are just hand puppets for the power elite, George was a fucking sock puppet for christs sake, did no body see that? He was the elites cruel joke on the yokels who still continue to play the game like its the lottery and they have the same numbers they use everytime because one of them good ole boys or bleeding heart saints will solve all the worlds problems. They fucking dick slapped every voter that year with a dirty half flaccid cockacross the cheek and the tip hit their lips. Left a bitter salty taste on the tip of everyones tongue and they were all too ashamed to admit it....

anybody that opposes the status quo is labeled a socialist it seems, even though it's blatantly obviously that only fragments of "capitalism" remain in the current western economic systems in the U.S and U.K.

it's the nanny state at the top and tough love free market capitalism for those at the bottom. there's also a lot of people that don't think they are at the bottom, but they are.

He's funny thats it.Leftest socialist Imo

The cat was let out of the bag after gwb was given the presidency after the 2000 election. That dunce had NO business being in politics muchless the president of the US.

Look at what he did....

And they really made it known what they think of us!

I actually think it's a joke now, seriously kind of like that movie from the 80's Trading Places where the two old ultra-rich guys bet a dollar in the bathroom that they can take a bum off the streets and switch places with a rich guy that works for them, anyone remember that?

This Trading Places (1983) - IMDb

Anyway, I think that is politics. The repubs got together one nite and they were all pretty drunk, and said I bet we can get the American sheep to elect this idiot GWB...and they did, just like the movie they were successful!

LMAO!

I agree, but I did not get the impression that is what his goal is, he is doing what EVERY American should do! Stand up and dismiss the entire federal government, and elect a new government that cannot be bought by special interest groups or lobbyists.

even though politics is bs, it won't stop people from relying on the gov't and that is the reality.

the real problem is that there is no way to break the tie between private capital and the public election cycle as it only gets worse with time as wealth in the US becomes more concentrated every day.

everyone in Congress could be replaced tomorrow and the new batch of politicians would simply be bought off just like the old ones.

I gave up on any meaningful changes long ago.

IMO that's simply subscribing to a different variety of magical thinking.

its more like the movie Idiocracy, bunch of brain dead lemmings racing to the cliff and final doom, those on top are just the leaders of the pack. Seriously isn't there a point where you can be comfortably rich and retire to give someone else a crack at the mountain of gold???? Those people are simply hoarders for no other reason than they are addicted to greed. I know of elderly people with so much money and no extended family and they just leave their money sitting in a bank while they live a paupers life....instead of leaving it in the bank for some rich asshole to lend to the working slave class spend it locally and boost your local economy. It will do far greater good in the mix than being ultimately donated later to a charity.

I love reading stories of rich millionaires leaving all of their money to one of their little pooches when they pass away. Dog's living like kings haha.

like the fuktards that think extreme inequality doesn't hurt the economy, the ones that have the least understand of how economics works in reality in a consumption based economy. anyone that preaches that greed is good is part of the problem.
