2009 Blue Jays

Apparently the Yankees have started making a big push for Halladay.

Hughes, Curveli (sp?), and another decent prospect.

Just the rumour

I like both players, Hughs is lights out in the bullpen now and I do prefer Curvelie over Molina as a future backstop.

How about CC for Doc straight up?

Sabathia hasn't lived up to expectations and is yet another example of a pitcher who tore up the lighter hitting NL, but finds himself getting torched regularly in the tough AL East. Can you say Carl Pavano and Randy Johnson?

More like a Johnson, Pavano is a homo.

I honestly don't see a deal happening now.

Only teams that are potentials are Boston, Texas, Anaheim, and LA.

Jays want a lot and won't settle for less.

Team???s record Burnett: 14-6 in 20 starts
Chamberlain: 13-6 in 19 starts
Pettitte: 13-7 in 20 starts
Sabathia: 11-11 in 22 starts

Rumour an unknown team has claimed Alex Rios off waivers.

Teams that might be interested: Mets, Yankees, Giants.

If they can get rid of him all the power to 'em. He has underproduced that last few years.

Now they need to find someone to pick up Vernon Wells.

Alex Rios Claimed on Waivers

According to Buster Olney, someone (we don't yet know who) has claimed Alex Rios off revocable waivers. Rios has $60 million remaining on his contract over the next six seasons. That leaves the Jays with three options:
  • They can let the claiming team take on Rios, and his contract;
  • They can pull Rios back off waivers and keep him; or
  • They can attempt to trade him to the claiming team.
As we showed a few weeks ago with Beyond the Boxscore's nifty Trade Value Calculator, while Rios can be frustrating at times, his contract is not at all dead weight. Therefore, my hope would be that if the Jays do move him, they're looking to get value back. I suppose that theoretically they could save money by penciling Snider in to play right field next season, with Lind taking left, Overbay staying at first, and perhaps Dopirak DH-ing, but that's putting a lot of eggs in the basket of two very young hitters. Realistically, if Rios is let go he likely has to be replaced, and if that's done on the free agent market it's doubtful whoever is brought in will be a better value than Alexis, unless the Jays luck into an Abreu 2009-type deal. At the same time, I have gotten the sense this season that the Jays are getting a little frustrated with Rios and they wouldn't mind moving him.
What would y'all do now, if you're the Jays? What do you think they will do?

Official now. Rios was Claimed by the White Sox. He will join the team in Seattle on Tuesday.

Yep they can have the 58 mil over the next 5 seasons. For a 270 hitter, who doesn't seem to show up most nights.

Wells is worse.

Ever since all this Steroid dilemma really hit the media, his stats have been well below par.

Problem being his salary jumps up to 12 million next year and 23 million the following season and 21 million a season for the remaining 3.

Ouch!
He's seems to have a lot of potential.

Jays Bullpen is starting to get back to last years status. The best ERA in baseball since July 8th.

Is Vernon Wells Toronto's David Ortiz?

CAPS

A juice boy who no longer juices and can't put up the numbers... certainly looks like it :p

Holy crap, are you kidding me!?

Yeah, I don't know what happened to that guy. He used to absolutely destroy the Red Sox.

I can tell you...

He is rumoured to be on the list of 103. All his injuries other then the broken bone, seem to fall in line with potential steroid use.

Yes his salary is that ridiculous. too bad they couldn't get rid of him on waivers. There has to be another sucker like the White Sox to pick up a chump.

This is one area where the NFL is far superior to MLB. In the NFL, they'd just cut you and rid themselves of such a horrible contract. Pay-for-performance, just like the rest of the world.

I agree.

But the MLBPA has too much of a strong hold to allow that to happen.
