Everyone expected Mark Teixeira to capture the American League Gold Glove at first base this season, but for all the talk of Derek Jeter's decline at shortstop, not many expected the captain to do the same.
Yet when the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards were announced, both Teixeira and Jeter were listed as winners. This is Teixeira's third career Gold Glove, his first since 2006. For Jeter, it's his fourth, also his first since 2006.
"I've said it time and time again, playing championship-caliber baseball starts with pitching and defense, and I think those two components were certainly the foundation for our success in 2009," Jeter said in a statement released by the Yankees. "I've always taken a great deal of pride in my defense, and being honored with a Gold Glove is an accomplishment I will never overlook."
"Solid defense is the most underrated component of winning baseball, but it is something I have always taken pride in," Teixeira said. "Winning a third Gold Glove means a lot to me, especially when good defense helped our entire team reach the ultimate goal of a World Championship."
Winners were selected by Major League coaches and managers prior to the conclusion of the regular season. Managers and coaches may not vote for players from their own club and only vote for players in their own league.
Here's the complete list of AL Gold Glove winners:
C Joe Mauer, Twins
1B Mark Teixeira, Yankees
2B Placido Polanco, Tigers
SS Derek Jeter, Yankees
3B Evan Longoria, Rays
OF Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners
OF Torii Hunter, Angels
OF Adam Jones, Orioles
P Mark Buehrle, White Sox

it's simple.

jeter is not the best defensive short stop in the american league.

teixeira was deserving though.

True, while he is not the best SS he is neither the worst.

Tex is very good, in fact Cano mentioned that because of Tex's range at first Cano is able to play closer to second helping out Jeter at short.
Now Jeter has less movements to his left and right.

Amazing what a good fielding first baseman can do, managers and GM's overlook the importance of this position.

I will say this, Tex is the one player that put the Yankees over the top this year...and it really screwed up Boston's plans for domination.

is cano fielding that many balls on the far side of 2nd base? i find that hard to believe. i can see how a first basemans range helps the 2nd baseman, and 3rd can help short, but 2nd and short? im not convinced

If Cano is playing closer to second base instead of playing closer or in the middle of both second and first, how does it not help the shortstop?

Jeter, Tex take home Gold Gloves | yankees.com: News

Making only four errors in 1,275 chances, Teixeira also saved numerous errors by other infielders with his wide-ranging scoops of errant throws. Adding Teixeira's Gold Glove defense to the mix created a ripple effect that helped Jeter as well as second baseman Robinson Cano and third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
"That guy has changed the whole infield," Cano said. "Before, I had to pay attention to my left, to my right. Now, when they have a pull hitter, I stay away from the line. He can cover the whole first-base side, and I can move toward the middle so Jeter can move over a little bit. He's not good, he's great."

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner :p

Have you ever seen Jeter field a ball on the 1st base side of 2nd, or cano the 3rd base side? if you have, it was a rarity. what I mean by that is that there is a pretty defined zone on that side of where a guys range is. Cano could be planting his ass on 2nd base, but if he doesn't cross it then jeter still has to cover that area. it doesn't effect his range at all. Now if Jeter knows Alex has a large range at 3rd it frees him up to play closer to second and get more balls that go up the middle. same with 1st and 2nd basemen. I just don't see the correlation between 2nd and short.

I do, I forget what's Jeter's weak side.
Say he's slower to his left and it would help if he took a set himself closer to third with Cano also shifting closer to his left it would help alot.

Same applies if you have a centerfielder who can cover alot of ground and help out the corner fielders.

Maybe I am wrong but you have to prove otherwise.

How does it help? any ball that gets past him up the middle on his side of the bag was his responsibility. no matter how close to second the second basemen is playing it doesn't free him from that responsibility.

if A-rod has a large range at 3rd then it frees Jeter to play closer to second and he can potentially reach more balls up the middle. If Jeter has to play closer to 3rd and can't reach as many balls up the middle that shows where his range is at. The only way the second baseman could help that is if he is fielding balls on the 3rd base side of second. I've never seen him do that. Have you?

i guess i just don't see it

I've seen 2nd base cross over to short plenty of times.
The hole got a lot smaller up the middle with Tex a first. Now at least when the infielders make a throw at first they can do it with confidence.

.

If you've seen that plenty of times then Jeter doesn't deserve a gold glove by a stretch of the imagination. it shows a lack of range

Not really, what if Jeter was shading more to his right against a right handed pull hitter....do you think he'll play straight up or play the pull hitter more to his left.

It happens all the time...in fact I've even seen Jeter makes plays towards second base.

He was voted by his peers....it's not an allstar vote where the yahoo's can vote.
