Regarding SS, I'd encourage people to examine Chile's retirement fund system.

The Current State of Chile's Private Pension System

Read it quickly, but that seems very interesting and a nice compromise.

It would leave SS intact but reform it into something that more guarantees to fill in the gaps if you did everything right than pay out an ever increasing amount of money to more and more participants.

You do realize SS/Medicare taxes are taken out of each paycheck. You don't file anything, you just pay them with no choice. The only way you are avoiding them is if you are paid under the table.

I am paid under the table. I report nothing, and file nothing, and pay nothing.

:roflmao:

then you shouldn't be allowed to vote

Yes, I should be.

I am a born and natural American citizen.

I will return to the US and pay these taxes.

I also visit the US every year, and purchase products, which include sales taxes.

He said he doesn't live in the United States and hasn't for a while (probably at least 6 years). So he doesn't pay U.S. taxes and probably doesn't vote in our elections, but seems to know what he's talking about.

I vote in EVERY election, via absentee ballot.

Every single, election. :thumb:

:roflmao:

how are you washing your money? if you're depositing it into a bank account it could catch up with you.

Then in my eyes you are no different than the illegal immigrants who leech off of the US. Possibly even worse because you are voting in these elections. You are a part of the problem, not a part of the solution. Hopefully one day this catches up to you and lands you in a nice comfy "pound me in the ass" prison.

He lives in a different country.

and i have even less respect for you now. i didn't think it was possible, but i guess it is.

I don't give a shit if you were born in the Lincoln bedroom of the white house. If you don't pay taxes you don't deserve to vote on how mine will be spent.

I am paid in US dollars and deposit a portion of it into an East Asian bank in Asia, which pays rates in the teens. ~15%.

The rest I keep as cash and hide it at home. I looked at buying gold recently but don't like the system of gold buying where I'm at.

If an American lives and work overseas they do not have to pay taxes in any income below $82,000 per year. You are supposed to file by law, however.

(If it wasn't a law that we had to file, millions probably wouldn't, so it's easier to have a law.) The IRS form to fill out and mail in is called a "Foreign exempt 255 from."

I thought the idiot accountant I knew was doing this but he wasn't so I said, "screw it."

There is one possible problem: I do max out my ROTH IRA every year, and have put money into my Vanguard index funds.

But I'm such a small fish, I don't think the IRS will even care.

I think Americans should try to avoid paying taxes, if possible. Not easy, but possible.

Think of doing a small side-business that is cashed based.

Paying into Social Security and Medicare is a scam for my generation and the younger generations.

Paying for the Military-industrial complex corporations like United technologies, Raytheon, BAE Systems, L-3, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, Northrup Grumman, etc.

Car registration, car tabs, and sales taxes.

I've paid my share in the past, and when I return to the US I'll just be another sucker who looks at my pay stub and sees what they take out all the time.

Some Americans have been hoodwinked into thinking paying taxes is a "duty" of some kind. Nothing could be further from the truth.

No thanks.

I don't see taxes as a duty. I see voting as one. this is a principle that led to our revolution. the idea that i would pay taxes yet not get a vote was/is contrary to the republic in which we live. and the idea that a man who doesnt pay taxes, but votes on how i will be taxed I find disgusting.

2 points above. Not really related, IMO.

What percentage of people fit into my category?

Far less than .05%.

It's irrelevant.

Remember, if you work as an employee filing a W-2 at a private sector company, run your own business, or work for the government -->

A large percentage of your money will go back to Corporate America and the government.

irrelevant? are you mad?

they are not 2 different points they are two sides of the same coin if anything. i don't care if the number is less than .05% or not. I would like to see where you got that number as I don't think that is something tracked. Next you will be arguing illegals and felons should be able to vote?

I need to clarify something:

I live and work outside of the US.

I am not breaking any laws. I AM following the laws.

I am an expat. "Expat" is a word of Greek origin which means I am working and/or living outside of my my home country for a period of time.

I do not use US public roads and highways. I do not receive any benefits from the US taxpayers, national, state or local government.

There are a few million (I forget the exact number) Americans that are working and living in foreign countries: oil workers in the M.E.., financial analysts in Hong Kong, teachers in international schools, and employees of American Multi-national companies (MNCs) that are now all over the world.

I am just a grain of sand among 300+ million American citizens.

No need to worry about me. I don't take from the system.:thumb:

The point which you are missing is that you are able to vote for the person who is running this country yet, you aren't using our roads, you're not paying taxes. Although your one vote for mr obama won't decide the presidency, its pretty immoral imo to be able to get the bag of candy without trick or treating so to speak.

I am not breaking any laws. I AM following the laws.

by your own admission you have not filed the appropriate paperwork the last 6 years.:hmmm:

I am voting for Bob Barr, the Libertarian candidate.

I've been voting Libertarian since 1996, when Dole was the (R) nominee. That is when I left the Republican party.

Anyway.....here is a real-life example, that is very common about my situation.

Joe Smith works for ABC Companey in St. Louis, Missouri.

ABC asks (or tells) Joe Smith to go to Tokyo, Japan with his family to work for ABC company on a 2 year project.

Joe Smiths, uproots his family, moves to Tokyo - temporarily - for 2 years for the company.

After the 2 year period Joe Smith and his wife and children will return to St. Louis.

So....should Joe Smith NOT be able to vote during this time, while he does what his American company tells him what to do?

American citizens have the right to vote. Look at Israel. And these Israelis don't even work for US companies. They live in Israel full-time, but they vote very heavily.

except that in this case 2 years is 6 and you have admitted to not filing the appropriate paperwork.

And by your own admission you don't contribute to the system either. So you don't contribute and you don't take, then why in the world should you be allowed to vote on how the system is managed and/or who manages it?:geewhiz:

But that's irrelevant, isn't it? You ARE allowed so, let me ask a different question. Since again, you don't contribute and you don't take from the system, why do you BOTHER voting on how the system is managed/who manages it? If it doesn't affect you, why are you trying to influence it?

What i got from his post is that he will in the near future be affected by what happens because he will be coming back.

The actions of our military and diplomats in several countries around the world ensure a level of safety for those working out of country. Also don't forget secret agents in operation around the world who could directly be keeping the country you're in from going unstable over night.....

Manic, I hope your joking.

Albob, I'll be returning to the US within 2 years.

Remember, American citizens that are living/working/temporarily staying abroad mail in their voting ballots all over the world.

We're living in an international world. The world is indeed "flattening" as Thomas Friedman says.

Staiblity of foreign nations is not about the US military, but about economics in Asia.

Keep working hard Americans. The government reckless deficits and pork-barrel project depend on you.

Resist.
