hi...after a long long time off training (bout 10 yrs!!)..i desperatley want to get back into it. im now 40...and 4 - 5 stone overweight!! how should i start training?....should i take extra precautions cos of my age?...and more importantly..is it poss at 40 to gain sum muscle and start lookin gd again after loosin the weight?

for starters, try reading this http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/showthread.php?t=21113

first thing you need to do is get your diet in order, that is the key to achieving your goals.

do you have access to any equipment?

another tip, try to list weights in pounds. :thumb:
some folks here may not know how much a stone is (14 pounds if im not mistaken.)

Listen not only is it possible, you WILL have amazing success and largely reverse the aging process and look 10-15 years younger inside of 6 months. Been there done this - even older than you. I put on 16 lbs of lean tissue and lost 50+ lbs of fat and have all my hair and very little grey (no kidding). Lifting will make your natural testos levels soar, you will get denser bone, you will feel wonderful and a lot of the every day aches and pains will go away. Not to mention people will notice you as being somehow different or "special" and will smile at you and respect you more than you can imagine. I have pro athletes run into me in shopping centers and airports who will just strike up a conversation and make you feel like a peer. That never would have happened before I transformed myself.

A vew cautions. It can get you very fatigued though since we tend to over train in a rush to get in shape and over do it. So my advise is focus on nutrition (read everything you can get your hands on), prepare your food with the highest quality things you can buy (fresh produce lean meats, egg whites etc). Nutrition and diet and macronutrient ratios are probably 70% of the equation. Then get in the gym 4 times per week and make it a priority as if your life depended on it (because it does). The other important thing that most forget is REST. Try to keep yourself rested and in a state of low emotional stress on workout days/evenings since that's when you grow new muscle. In fact I use to feed my muscle before bed with a slow absorption protein (casein - cottage cheese 1-2% low fat) so I have aminos available when the GH cycle kicks in a few hours after you sleep.

It can be done and it can be amazing. As a little motivation I can assure you that your confidence levels will soar and younger women will in fact go out of their way to be friendly (we all love a little attention and flirting even when happily married). There are other not so subtle reactions to positive nitrogen synthesis that your wife will thank you for too and it will all just cascade in a positive way to keep you "up" (pun intended) all the time to encourage you to make more progress. There is also an amazing feeling of well being and relaxation that you have to experience to relate too. You will be calmer, less tense and people will love to be around you since you will be uplifting and a "winner" to them.

Good Luck,
OD

wow 10 years?? I can't imagine 10 days without lifting unless I was unable. What made you take such a long break? I definately think you can do it at 40. My dad waited much longer than you to start lifting again, he lifted as a teen and waited basically 20 years or even more from my knowledge. He started lifting again at 46 years old, and he started using steroids (not the heavy stuff) but I was like 10 years old I remember finding the bottles in the fridgerator wrapped in tin foil. In 3 years he was a pumped 220 ripped with 5% or under b/f. His best bench was 375, and he had a small bone frame. So if you have any better genetics-Than I have- 100% trust that you can do it especially with steroids if you are excepting that as an option. Steroids don't hurt you like most people think they do, although I have never took them, I know from my dad that they aren't as bad as people portrait them to be. He was getting older and he wasn't producing the high amounts of testosterone he was when he was in his 20's so he basically just induced some, and didn't over do it or anything. He said he used horse steroids or something I can't remember, but he knows a lot about steroids, and he never took the andro or anything. He always told me that he would always take off from his cycle as long as he was on his cycle so if he was on for 2 months, he would be off for 2 months, ect...

My advice to you is start lifting heavy in the 12 rep range and work your way down there. always work heavy, forget the light stuff. a ford f450 moves heavy weight, a honda civic moves 2 people at a time. If your goal is to be huge, "lift huge to get huge". Bigger weights bigger muscle motor units. :thumb:

a change in personal circumstances didnt make it possible until now to be able to start serious training.....im a single parent and went through bankruptcy...was ashit time!!....ne ways.....talking bout gear...i used gear when i trained b4......only winstrol and deca...tried testiverone...but the old acne came back with avengance!!!!....its good to hear that ppl at my age do make gd gains and are able to get into the sport and age isnt a major barrier!! i would love to be able to look good without the shirt on again....and if it is possible at my age...i will give 110% as i did when i used to train!!!!:)

Good luck on the work out regimen. I took a couple of years off from weightlifting due to back injury but I'm turning 40 and getting ready to set up a home gym and get back into it myself. I can't "weight" to start feeling energetic again, fitting into my clothes again and losing 2-stone myself!!!

* Ease back into it over a couple of weeks, don't push too much until you're again aclimated to the routine.
* Vital to do warmup for each muscle before working it.
* IMO, keep the reps up at 10 or more, max. 1 minute rest between sets
* Do aerobics for both the fitness benefit and also if done prior to weights, as a good overall warmup.

well i just turned 52 this month. I'm having all kinds of fun. been on gear now for 1 month. gained 21 lbs. now weigh 275 lbs. 53" chest, 44" waist, 19" arms and bench 360. When i hit the 300-320 lbs in weight, i guess that's when the hard work really kicks in, (CUTTING). Doubt if it's gonna be as much fun, but this old SOB is going for it. Go 4 IT, go 4 it.
