Cannabinoids, namely THC-9, are *not* considered carcinogenic according to many scientists who have studied cannabinoids.
Recent news articles refer to the impurities and other materials that are naturally present in cannabis that may cause cancer when consumed via smoking.
Many news writers, and sadly many researchers, don't differentiate between the hazards of cannabinoids, such as THC-9 (virtually none), and the hazards of smoking. Combustion of most materials, including cannabis, will produce potentially toxic byproducts, such as tar; "high-THC" cannabis is actually safer in regards to smoking, since one can smoke less to obtain the same effect.
However, cannabis can be consumed in numerous ways that don't require smoking at all, such as via inhaler (experimental), via vaporizer, cooking in food, or via tinctures.
