As for using free weights without maxing out, what if you get injured or even suffer a heart attack? You might not have even started your second rep, but you might not be able to move the weight, except for down.

It reminds me of a tightrope walker who fell to his death a few years ago. His fellow tightrope walkers (I think they were his family) wondered why he didn't grab on to the rope as they all planned to do in such a situation. It was because he broke his ribs on the rope before he had the chance.

Just the other day I watched a kid go for 'one more rep' on flat bench. He failed at the third rep and tried to rack it on the lower safety pins. He missed both sides, and the barbell fell down to his neck. He was lucky I was there to pull it off him...

When I first started working out I got stuck on decline. That was a bit scary. Luckily someone was able to help me rack the weight.

but with db's u could have just dropped them..no danger..which is what everyone keeps arguing against here

Got 225 stuck on decline about a year ago and had to yelp at some dude that was walking by and somehow didnt notice.

Okay Oak, how about this one... its safer to lift with a buddy than alone. Besides the various situations that could occur (heart attack, choking, whatever), it also allows you to lift with weights that arent just dumbells. Ooh, or my favorite... dropping a dumbell on the noggin while benching. Been there done that! :D

u dropped a db on ur head while benching???interesting..

this sounds a lot better:thumb:

Yeh, just caught the side of my head. Was doing a flat bench with 90 or 95s and pushed a little too much... elbow gave out and down it came. Stuff happens when you turn intensity up.

I have been training alone the past few years, never a spotter and I do free weight squats, presses, etc., never had a problem. And since I see absolutely no reason to do any 1RM's, nor do I feel that I need to go to absolute failure it works fine for me.

good thinking there.

i just cannot believe how dumb I can be after so many years, you'd think that one would learn better, but in my case, nope.............serves me right,

kdwa1

agree with your comments, hope the 'face drop' wasn't too bad, sounds horrendous.

It wasn't too bad Ice but almost knocked me out,Thank God someone came running to pull it off.Needless to say I stopped training that way and now use DB's.

kdwa1, glad to know that you were ok, I will be switching to DBs when ever I am doing something at home from now on

That's great. I just came back from the gym and I saw a guy crushing his ribs on the bench press. I stopped my exercise and went over to help him, because no one else seemed to notice (just a couple of girls talking among themselves).

He just said "phew!" and thanked me. That dumbass.

A couple 60-80 lb DB's works just fine as far as I'm concerned.Single bars get scarey if not on a rack.
I like Z bars for curls and Tri's.

Yeah

Yeah, it just happened to me. :p 1 hour ago. The muscle just stopped working, there should an horror movie with this subject.

Eggs dropped dumbell on head... Damn this explains a lot  :hehe:

I didn't get stuck...but I did have a lil incident with the leg press machine. Had 5 45's on each side (usually no biggy). Well...had the cd player going (which I never listen to while working out, only cardio). I get under the press...lift it up off the rack......and wham...it slows starts coming down, and down and down. Had to crawl out from under the damn thing. Wasn't no way in hell I was getting that back up on my own. Peeps from the gym had to help me unload it, push it back up, then reload it again. I died laughing for about 30 mins after thinking how stupid it must have looked with me stuck underneth it.

Used to happen to me quite a lot actually. I have been trying to be more careful about it, but I just roll the bar onto my stomach and push one side up and slide out from under it. I always try to push that last rep out. Now, I am better at knowing whether or not I can push out that rep.

JLB,

You sound like you have strong legs lifting 5 45's on each side.
I forgot how heavy that is exactly cause I haven't worked out in a gym for a long time, but sounds heavy. I need to start going hard and heavy on my legs. I have chicken legs for a guy. I guess I just never really liked working legs. The most intense workouts I received regularly on my legs were riding my bike regularly. I hated the reverse compound leg lifts at the gym. I remember those being the worst.

Well anyway JLB, better be careful and don't get stuck under any more leg presses :hehe:

Being injured is one thing but why in the world would you think you would suffer a heart attack while working out? Are you really that out of shape or old that you expect one?

What if I go out to my car and get run over? Do I not go outside anymore to avoid this?

Ahhhh, you suck :flipoff:

:p

I read that lifting alot of weight could cause that, and I heard about a World's Strongest Man or two who died of a heart attack while working out. And some people have genetic heart problems that are difficult to diagnose. All that scares me.

Those guys not only work hard but they are likely hard drug users. Do you really think any athlete at the top of their game is in it for health? I dont think so, the body is only meant to do so much.

If you ain't pushing your limits, you're simply goin through the motions, and what good is that? Every thing worthwhile involves risk. It reminds me of a commercial that used to be on years ago - "If a great body came in a bottle, everone would have one."

You should try to stay within your limits... If you push beyond them then more than likely you are vulnurable to sustaining injuries  This comes with experience knowing how to set your limits in a range where you can achieve maximum growth without risk of injury.

My dad has a wrestling/gym coach in high school that died when he was like 30. The guy had wrestled and played football, and been working out since he was like 14, and was huge. He was casually jogging one day and his heart just gave out. Apparently he had some rare heart problem that no one had known about before then.

Happend to me...i had to do a sit-up.
I would have yelled for :help: but i was at home alone so no one can hear me.

Yeah, I heard a few stories about heart attacks while jogging too. I think it happend to one of my teachers.
age 16, 5'9", 165 pounds
Bench:165
Squat:275
Not sure about 16, but when I was about 17, I was 25 lbs lighter than you and benched the same and was considered strong, though I barely worked out. I'd say 165 for you is good.

(Not that anyone asked me)

HA! This happened to me once. ONCE. It only takes once, then you learn not to let it happen again.

For me though, it was the first time I tried doing bench presses at the gym. I was newbie and didn't know what I could handle. I got an impressive 135 pounds stuck on my chest and had to squeal for help. :D

Damn Baboon....

At my gym if they seen only 135 stuck on your chest, They would leave it there.  <just kidding> :hehe:

I used to have that problem all the time, :D since i always give it my all when working out in my good ole garage. I used to lift without collars and let the wait tip off one side and then the other(if i yelled for help, no one would hear me), until i bought this

I usually don't go up to the 5-45's (450 total)anymore. Well, not since I had the surgery on my knee in Jan. Had an old trainer that loved to torture me on the leg press. He's have me start with 3 on each side for 30 reps, add another plate each side for 20, then another plate for 10, rest for a few mins, then go back down with no rests. Couldn't walk for days after those damn workouts. Sometimes I throw them in during off season. I haven't got stuck since that time.:D
