I did some deadlifts without shoes today and I can say that it's probably the best I've ever felt doing the lift. I noticed a few things:
First, the stability is greatly improved without shoes. Throughout the lift I felt like the weight was properly distributed and that I was applying force correctly. For a long time I've felt that I didn't dig into the floor with my heels, but now I've come to think that shoes were the main problem.
Second, lifting without shoes gives your feet and lower legs some work during the lift. Right now I feel muscles in my feet and ankles that I've never felt before. I also think that it helps improve ankle flexibility.
I'm done deadlifting with shoes and want to try squatting without shoes as well. There's really no comparison between the feel of doing these with and without shoes.
