Hey. Do any of you guys know the Atkins Diet? There is a new DVD out now, available at Walmart. I have to tell you it is really good. Have you ever felt like you need to lose a little wait? I have and I was at the point of giving up until my friends told me about this Atkins DVD. I went to pick up a copy and It really works. I couldn`t believe how fun dieting could really be, and everything was so straightforward. Have any of you seen this DVD already. I would be interested in your Ideas and if you have anything you wish to say about it please let me know.Cheers and good luck :thumb:

My thoughts.. Use the DVD as a Frisbee....

Hey bud.....you're preaching shade tree mechanics to a bunch of hardcore race enthousiasts. IE, you're wasting your time with the Fatkins here. Just like hardcore race enthousiasts dont respect "Do It Yourself Mechanics", these guys dont respect Atkins. Why? Because we already know its a diet for sedentary lazy asses, not hardcore fitness people.

Atkins has its purposes. There is no reason to bash it without at least providing some critical feedback.

put some sweat into it and lose fat (not weight) the hard way. it will take a little longer but it is healthier and you are more likely to keep the weight off.

yes, it helps children that have seizures due to Epilepsy.

Just off the top of my head:

Mood imbalences (low serotonin, exacerbated by rising keytones)
Low energy (low glycogen level, among other things)
Lowered liver function
Kidney damage
Part of the weight loss is depleted stores of glycogen in the mucles (3 grams water to 1 gram glyogen, I believe)

Add to that the current studies have show that over 80% of the Atkins dieters don't keep the weight off.

It has nothing to do with low carbs and everything to do with fat intake. Michael Geffen, of Geffen Records fame, has a child who grew up with severe seizures and all the doctors would do is prescribe various pills.

Geffen took it on himself to find a solution and ran across a paper from a doctor in the 1930s (I believe) that showed that diets with enough fat lowered the frequency and severity of the seizures.

On a side not, the doctors of that time had the remedy put away as it failed to provide them with an revenue. Geffen was talking about suing the AMA.

I agree, I know of 2 coworkers on it and while they did lose weight they suffered dearly for their laziness. They were cranky and weak, the skin on their face sagged and their breath reeked of dead rat.

Only to gain it twice fold.

Your question sounds more like an Atkins pitch than a question

Hey have you guys ever heard of the G-Man diet? You send all of your money to G-Man, and your wallet gets lighter!!

Atkins will fail just like any other diet will fail, you cannot succeed with a diet, you have to change you eating habits in a way that you can live with forever. Diets will give you temporary weight loss, but all weight will be regained.

Diet's do not work, and never will, period.

Atkins is no good for people who actually exert a lot of energy and sweat when they pump iron.

Actually from what I've read it's being in Ketosis and your body using ketones for energy that helps with the seizures for children. Also, you don't need fat to be in ketosis you just need NO carbs. Getting rid of carbs greatly reduces your caloric intake so the reason people add so much fat is because you need your calories from somewhere and there is only protein and fat for options.

my mom did atkins for a while, i think it was really working for her although it kinda puzzled me a bit, she'd always be fryin stuff up in loads of grease n' fat and i was thinkin... "WTF! that is the atkins diet?..." but i think cutting out the carbs really helped her lose weight... the high protein - low carb issue that atkins raises is very important

like Prince said... diets don't work, new eating habbits for life are the only way you will keep the fat off, unforunately for my mom she still has not realised this... she always diets for like 10 months then 8 weeks later its back to square 1 and another - i need to diet and lose some weight rant!

i should really make her a new eating plan - prob is i'm not too sure that she will stick to it, luckily i take after my dad when it comes to stuff like this :)

peace

perhaps this guy is jokin?

I mean he started his thread with ;)

I personally see no problem with Atkins for the majority of the population if they can stick to it. Alot of people say it is bad because people go back to their bad habits, but how many people do you think can stick to a BBer diet for the rest of their life? The problem isn't with the diet, it is with the lack of dedication people have. With Gastric bypass becoming more and more prevalent, don't look for the situation to improve any.

Guys first and so far only post.

A; he was jokeing, trying to get to know some people here

B; he somehow gets a percentage of every sold DVD (how do I get in on that?)

agree...

it kills me when people bash this diet when 90% of them have not tried it. Atkins is not a lifestyle change but when used properly it can cause rapid fat loss in a fairly short amount of time. the fact that many people rebound after coming off has no no relevancy on the effectiveness of the Atkins Diet.

and high protein diets do not cause liver damage... :finger:

Wasn't the myth refering to kidney damage?

Anyway, from a personal perspective, low carb diets have their place - but for me, atkins and weightlifting go hand in hand reluctantly.

If i was going to do a ketosis diet, it would probably be a TKD with cyclical refeeds.

So I did Atkins for 2 years and lost 70 lbs. I also exercised and watched my fat intake. A lot of people go "balls-out" with fat when they do Atkins. That is not how it is supposed to be done. Atkins calls for "moderate" fat, not "excessive" fat. I felt great while I was on it and have maintained my weight. (I'm a bit over now because I just had my third child) Anyway, what I think sucks about Atkins is that I don't want to do it anymore, but I have NO IDEA how to eat any other way. I think that's whay a lot of people gain their weight back after "going off" Atkins. They think that they can still eat all the cheese, bacon, etc. That's my take on it.

yes...a very stupid old myth

I think the Atkins diet has it's place. It is a good way to help someone get their fat loss jump-started when they have a severe obesity problem. However, I do feel that it is certainly not the healthiest way to go about weight loss.

I was just wondering where you got the liver damage thing from lol.

It came about because of studies conducted with high protein intakes on people with existing kidney damage. Ridiculous conclusion to jump to for anyone without kidney issues.
