I was wondering about the whole "dry roasted peanut" thing. I imagine they would be good for a bulking diet, but what about a maintainence diet? I'm actually trying to lean out my mid section, but keep or add size everywhere else. Would peanuts be a good choice? I also love trail mix.... not the kind with shreddies and pretzils, but the kind with mixed nuts and dried fruit pieces. Is that a good idea for my goals, or no?

Nuts are very caloric dense but a great fat source. Just keep the amount that you small and you will be fine. Walnuts are the best choice for nuts.

Why walnuts? If I may ask.... I thought Almonds were the best choice. :hmmm:

The reason that walnuts demonstrate such heart healthy benefits is because of the presence of high amounts of omega-3-fatty acids, particularly alpha linoleic acid, and phytosterols.
Omega-3-fatty acids reduce triglyceride levels and reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaque on arteries by increasing HDL levels (high density lipoproteins, or the good cholesterol) and reducing LDL levels (low density lipoproteins, also know as the bad cholesterol). Phytosterols appear to lower total cholesterol levels, however, the mechanism by which it does this is not entirely known. In fact, walnuts contain the highest amount of omega-3-fatty acids in 1 ounce of nuts in comparison to other nuts (2.5 g of omega-3-fatty acids versus less than 0.5 g found in other nuts).

In addition to heart healthy ingredients, walnuts also contain a wealth of other nutrients, including vitamin E, the B vitamins, fiber, and several minerals. Many of the studies performed suggest that you only need to consume only a handful of walnuts a day to receive the cholesterol-lowering benefits of walnuts

Almonds are also a better choice of nut though. I also like pumpkin seeds myself. :)

Thanks for the great info. I think I'll just make a mix of the almonds and walnuts then! Don't almonds have more protein then walnuts though? Errr, nm...I'll look it up.

Just make sure you don't over do it....I could probably eat my daily calorie intake just in nuts in one sitting. They are very calorie dense and a small handfull is ussually all you should be taking in.

Thanks for the FYI Deadbolt. I actually need a little more cal. intake though. I can't seem to ever keep up with my bulking diet so a little more shouldn't hurt at this point.

I wouldnt bother much about protein from nuts. But keep an eye out for fats.

I have trouble getting enough calories in, even on a cutting diet, on my no carb days, so I eat some peanuts and they help a great deal.
