Hello everyone. I have been following the Strong Lifts 5x5 program for a little over a month and am really getting into it. I have been mostly into long distance running without a lot of actual weight training for 5 or 6 years. I will continue to run, but not to the extent as I did before. Although, I will be training for the Las Vegas Marathon in December.

Anyone else come from a mainly cardio background when the started? I am interested to see how I will be able to fit the strength training and marathon training together.

I think I would be labeled as a "skinny guy" being 5'10 and 145 - 150lbs.

Looking forward to using this forum for great advice and motivation. Any helpful tips are always appreciated.

if you're cutting back on your running, but training for a marathon, how many miles a week were you running?

are you training to race the marathon, or just finish it?

as a former runner, 1970-1990, i always incorporated running with weight training.

specific exercises with the weights will make you a better runner.

reading your post looks like you were off lifting for 5-6 years..

ez back into it.

what are your goals? you want to turn into a bodybuilder? strongman? running still# 1, but you want to add a bit of strength training to your running program?

lets hear your goals, and i'll give you my opinion if you want to continue your running while adding a bit of weights to your training plan.

you want to be a bodybuilder or strongman, others here willl probably give you their opinions.

Thank you for the replies.

I was getting a little burned out on running as I had just been training back to back to PR in several marathons. I feel pretty good about my current PR in the marathon and just want to run them without the stress of thinking about time. I haven't started training yet, that will be next month, but I plan a 2 or 3 runs during the week along with lifting and getting a long run in on the weekends. I still have a pretty good base of endurance built up, so as long as I can maintain that, I should be good.

Not really looking to be a bodybuilder, just want to get stronger as well as break up the monotony of running. I don't want to make running my #1, but rather be better at a variety of things. I like the feeling of running and biking, just want strength too.

Nice to see there are some others with the same background. I'd just like to know how you progressed and if there were any major setbacks from change. The lifting is very different, but that's what I was going form.

Thanks again!

Good luck. I was running/doing cardio too when I started a few months ago. I find the bb-ing a PITA to coordinate with the running. A friend wants me to do a half and I'm not sure I'll be ready by mid-Sept. Might have to just do the 5K.
