Het fellas just wondering if I am bench pressing on a smith machine, say with single 45 pound plate on each side would that be considered as 135 pounds in total or just 90 pounds?

I count it as 135, but I have worked with a smith that was heavier, yet MOST are assisted and only weigh 15-20 pounds or so for the bar.

Whatever you choose just be consistent about it.

The one they have at my gym the bar maybe weights in at 5 lbs. it is almost like pushing air up. I hate it.

Try asking someone at the gym what the smith bar weighs. They should be able to tell you.

The smith machine is great for building muscle but not power, heres an example if you'll lifting 225 on the machine I'll bet you want move it on the free weights.

just don't count the bar. I never count the bar or the leg press sleds or the hack squats. Just count the weight you put on so 90lbs. Who cares if the bar is 45lbs, 20lbs or whatever, it is assisted. get out of the smith machine!!

It depends on the type of Smith machine you have at your gym.

At mine we have 3 Smith machines. 2 of them are exactly the same & the other is different.

The 2 that are exactly the same, the bar you can pick up with one finger & easily move it up & down so in no way is the weight that you think you have on there, the actual weight. It's anywhere from 10-15lbs lighter than what it should be.

Then the 3rd Smith machine is the old school Smith machine.

The bar is much heavier.

The bar is AT LEAST 45lbs but it's more like 50-55lbs & in no way can you pick up the bar with one finger let alone one hand even.

This is the one that I use, I don't even bother with the other 2 light pieces of crap. They're newer & cheaply made, basically a knock off to save money.

so i guess from all these posts .. i should move to a regular unassisted bench press machine

Well like I said it depends on what type of Smith machine you have?

Is it the smith machine that you can pick up the bar with one finger? This one isn't the good one to use.

Or is it the old school smith machine where the bar is 50-55lbs?

If it's the old school smith machine than you can use this one on ocassionally as I use it every so often for military press, flat & incline bench.

well i think its the new kind because i can lift the bar with like 2 fingers ...

What difference does it make it if the bar is heavier or lighter? That doesn't change the fact that the smith machine allows you to move in only one plane and is not biomechanically correct.

One of my gyms Smith machines has some kind of negative force on it and I actually hate it, feels extremely unnatural. I'm sure some like it though.

Well think about it.

If one bar you can pick up with one finger versus a 50 or 55lb bar that is more like a free bar, obviously you'd take the more natural one.

I see guys putting 3 45lb weights aside or 2 45lb weights aside on the smith machine where you can pick up the bar with one finger & they think they're doing that amount of weight when they go to try it on the free bar, they realize that they are doing far less than what they were doing on the crap smith machine.

It's not the same weight, that's the difference between the old school smith machine & the newer ones that are guided & that you can pick up the bar with one finger.

Those ones are just sh!t plain & simple compared to the old school heavy ones that are more natural & not guided at all so it's you pushing the weight.

even if it is a 45lb bar or a 50lb bar it is not the same weight as if you were to lift it free weight stlye. It is a completely different exercise. It is assisted, no matter what the weight of the bar. I still don't know where you are going with the weight of the bar thing.

Like I said if the bar is only 20lbs versus 45lbs or 55lbs it makes a big difference.

Yes it is a different exercise, but the lighter & guided smith machine versus the old school heavy one is absolutely not the same weight.

Like I said guys put 255lbs or whatever on the light guided smith machine & do it & they think they're doing that weight when it is actually 20lbs or more lighter.

But I do agree that is a different exercise, but as I said I prefer the heavy, old school smith machine.
