Does anybody have any comments about body fat monitor scales that use the bioelectrical impedance methods? There is now an even hand held device made by Omron. Check out www.omronhealthcare.com

I'd trust calipers before I'd trust electrical impedience. One day, I went in and tested @ 10%, 4 days later I tested at 13.9%

My company uses the hand held ones.. I don't like them at all, it reads me 4% higher than the calipers..

I read an article once (I think it was muscle and fitness hers) that said the electronic ones have an accuracy of +/- 13%.

Yeah, those hand held ones are crap.

Calipers are inferior because they only measure subcutaneous fat. What about fat in your muscle or organs?

It may not affect your appearance, but including intramuscular fat is the true measure of your body fat percentage.

My organs have fat?

I thought organs were organs, muscle was muscle and fat was fat.

There are intra muscular fat stores, and fat protects organs. But, who gives a shit? It doesn't effect your appearence in any way.

Complex problems have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers.

I think calipers are best, I measured at 4.5% with calipers, and then 12% with a bio-scale later that day. I know I'm closer to the 4.5%. Yeah, and who cares about fat around organs, anyhow the summer's almost over, it's time to start worrying less about the bodyfat and time to eat like a horse and get big!!!!!

So can we all agree that electrical impedance always measures a higher body fat percentage than calipers?

No. It's higher OR lower, but not usually correct.

I actually got me one of those about 6 months ago (Tanita TBF-611), and had my bf% checked by my dietician (callipers). The scale rated me 1% higher ..

Today, I actually use it to measure "relative" changes in bf%. If the scale tips higher, I must be getting fatter.

A word of caution: This type of bf%-measurement depend heavily on the hour of the day. Try to measure up at about 6pm consistently. Only then will you be able to plot a dependable graph of your bf%.

Do you work out ?
