I was just wondering what is the best possible thing to have for breakfast to get started for the day.

This is a completely individual thing.

For me there is no better start than a big bowl of steaming hot oats (good starchy carb) with a natural flavoured protein powder mixed in, topped with fresh blueberries (excellent source of anti-oxidants), chopped walnuts (healthy fats), cottage cheese (complete protein) and cinnamon. Some ff/sf thick plain natural yoghurt would also be a nice addition spooned on top....

:chomp:

If I had more time (and wanted to be completely ideal) I'd probably opt to swap the powder for some scrambled egg/egg-whites.

Ok, I vote we all meet at Emma-Leigh's for breakfast from now on ;)

Me? I just settle for a bowl of Go-Lean Crunch and a multi. :thumb:

thats sounds dman good. I second the vote.

Hello everybody. Nice to be here. :)

Why are cereals recommended for breakfast? I know this sounds stupid, but I have just began learning about nutrition. :hmmm:

Cereals are good becuase they are fast digesting carbs to give you energy fast in the morning.

I'm with Emma on this one MuscleM4n: Oats are a great start to the day because it provides your body with a slow-digesting, low glycaemic carbohydrate. Save the simple carbs for post-workout when your body needs them the most.

When I was bodybuilding, I used to chow down:

6 egg whites and two yolks scrambled, 1 1/2 cups of oats, 50g raisins, 3 slices toast (depended on bulking/cutting as to white or wholemeal), 1 cup of skim milk and my multi-vitamin. Yes, it is a lot of food, but it's the plan I used to get big.

What about fruits and vegetables in the morning? Aren't they as good as cereals ?
Thanks for answering newbie questions :)

Yes i agree with you madds - slow digesting carbs are generally best for bodybuilders.

Whey shake 30mins before your breakfast to rush some protein for your starving muscles when you wake up ;)

I usually have Whey with milk on waking then 30 mins later oats with yoghurt and 3 boiled eggs with yolk for breakfast.

Myway - yes you can add some fruit, it is good for a fast insulin spike.

vegetables in the morning? nah - more important issues at hand like getting your protein and carbs in first.

Add vegetables to your second meal of the day.

On the other hand avoid eating fruit before bed as your last meal becuase of it's high sugar and carb content.

Generally the key points for breakfast is to get your carbs and protein in as a priority, if you still have space in your stomach for fruits go ahead if not that's why multi-vits and minerals exist :)

Hope that helped

Steve

Don't forget the good fats!

As Emma was saying above, it is imperitive you consume decent amounts of 'complete' protein. That is protein derived from meat, dairy etc. Don't count protein from your veggies and grains and the like.

I strongly agree - low insulin sensitivy = these carbs being stored as bodyfat.

Hey madds

i did mention that i have 3 eggs in the morning along with the yolks - their is the healthy fats for me :)

I wasnt singling out your diet, I was just letting darkt (the thread starter) know that healthy fats are important as well.

If I were you, especially at your weight, I would knock out the yolks and supplement with fish oil caps or some flaxeed oil or even some walnuts like Emma does.

Interesting stuff. So its not necessary to eat meat in order to get my healthy fats.

BTW: Aren't 3 eggs in the morning too much for us ? :hmmm:
