not sure if this is in the right area to post this?

I read somewhere the other day that your body only rebuilds muscle at night when you're asleep. I WISH i remember where i read that at and could repost it. But is that true?

if so what would be the point of post work out protein? your body isn't going to use it to rebuild muscle b/c your not asleep... thats why i think it was bull but i dont know for sure

Muscle builds while you are resting, so yes it is going to build while you are sleeping, but I don't think it's only when you are sleeping. Post workout protein should be taken post workout.

Building and repairing muscle while you sleep does happen with or without protein. However, adding a post protein shake and some BCAA's to your diet will allow faster recovery time for your muscles and fuel for your new muscle cells to grow. Try it. Workout one week using no post workout shake and then the following next week use post work shakes. Make a log of your body recovery. You will see that there is a difference.

Concur with scorpion.

day to day 'work' creates minor micro trauma to the muscle tissue, your normal diet provides enough nutrients to repair and rebuild the tissues (along with other chems your body nat. produces in trace amounts) when you add increased resistance training you intensify that trauma with the goal to break down the tissue and create cell division. to do this your body will require extra nutrients for many different reasons including maintaining a positive nitrogen balance assuming the goal is hypertrophy.
Studies have shown your body turns anabolic after heavy training and this window is a small window. to maximize this muscle building opportunity you need to throw down some fast digesting protein into your body which is why most of us use a liquid protein devoid of fat (fat impedes digestion) and some include extra glucose as it creates an insulin spike adding protein synthesis. If you skip this critical window your missing out.
Bottom line, scorpion has it down, your body doesn’t just grow at night, people concerned with fat loss also notice with no sleep or little their bodies do not change. Sleep is critical for change – which is why you just might benefit from afternoon siestas! But that doesn’t mean your body is stagnant when your awake.

It is really a good point that we grow our muscle and other body tissues while taking rest, so there is no doubt that protein supplements taken are not useful when we sleep, all the anabolic processes of body become fast when we sleep.
