My calices are getting worse and worse. Someone said it's because of the way I grip the bar. They've gotten so bad that I can't even leave my hand around the bar went doing deadlifts, shrugs, etc. I let the bar nestle in the cradle of my fingers when I do these excercises. What can I do about my calices and how should a proper grip be? And I don't want to wear wrist straps or gloves!

Grip the bar further from the thumb than you are doing it now, if you have an overly loose grip this will also stretch the skin, causing this. I dont like gloves either.

What's wrong with gloves? I use them...of course, I still get calluses.

Sometimes your calluses get worse before they get better.I don't use gloves and I do a lot of pull-ups plus heavy lifting.Once my calluses got strong enough they got smooth and don't bother me anymore

What IS the deal with gloves?

Some people use them, others tell me "dont use them!!"

Whats all the drama over? ;)

I never use gloves anymore.....I find I lose grip strength when I use them...as if I'm not in control of my lifts.

When I started lifting the gloves helped but over time your skin will strengthen and actually smooth out...I say "lose the gloves"!

Gloves, are for gardening ;)

I use gloves usually - they have a "gel-grip" which stops the bar from slipping.

The only time I will ditch the gloves is when I purposely want to get calices... apparently women love nicely smoothed out calices... not the rough ass skin-peeling ones, lol.

Drop the gloves. They do hurt grip strength. They will make your wrist weak also. The Febuary Men's Health issue said drop gloves and belts. However if you are squatting or deadlifting heavy, then I think you should use a belt. To avoid a hernia. Other than that, leave them at home. That's my opinion. They supposedly make your lower back weak.

I feel the same way.

Besides, there is nothing like the satisafction of racking a set of dumbells and noticing some skin hanging on them
