i always read "based on a 2000 calorie diet". what is the deal on that? do i need 2000 calories? i figured out that before i work out( my work has a pretty nice gym i hit every day for 1 hour after work) that prework out i take in only 1,035 calories. i read somewhere that you should burn more then your intake. so as long as i burn more then 1035 im ok?

your calorie intake will be determined by your stats and your goals. everyone is different. your pre-workout meal is 1035 calories in and of itself?

ok, here i am. hi. im dan by the way. 5'8", 172lbs. not fat, just have some stuborn belly flab i cant seem to work off. my goal? um... ever seen "A STREET CAR NAMED DESIRE"? Marlon Brando in that film has the body i want. hes not all ripped, just toned with some pretty good sized pipes! im pretty lean every where else, but just a bit of flab i cant shake.

How much do u weigh and how much do u wanna weigh?
Theoretically, to maintain your present body weight. if you weigh X amount of weight, you need to take in 10 *X amount of calories to remain there.
To keep it simple: If you weigh: 200 lbs, consume 2,000 calories per day.
That's also based on a good ratio of protein/carbs/fat.

That's just if u sit on your butt all day. The more active you are, u need to adjust (add) calories to match your needs. On the same level, if u want to lose weight, reduce the intake. (Not drastically. Where most people screw up...we're talking a few hundred calories here. Say, 1600 - 1800 cals per day.
That's a VERY broad stroke of it. Should go check out stickies in this section and learn up....

As wolf asked, u take in all those cals at once, or broken up with multiple meals?
Always go for the small meals.
Think of it this way:
Say you have a little fire. What happens when u toss a BIG log onto a small fire? It extinguishes it, or it smolders... Now, same fire, but this time, you throw in a small stick. What happens? The fire burns that up, and grows. A little while later, you toss in another stick, and that fire again burns it and grows...You keep throwing smaller sticks into the fire, a little at a time...it feeds the fire, it becomes 'efficient'..as opposed to the one big log smoldering at the other 'pit'.
Eventually, your fire will grow to where u will need to add larger sticks...but still often, as your fire is hungry...till it reaches a size that you want to maintain. Pretty much the same with your metabolism.

..and how soon before your workout is this meal? If too soon, your body will be busy digestig the food, and the workout will come second....
