Hello, my name is david and i need help on the best approach to achieving my goal. You see, im a 17 year old male that has some muscle....but most of it (especially in the chest area) has a layer of fat that i cant seem to get rid of. After reading alot of the posts i was thinking about running every other night for 20 minutes (to lose weight) and work out (pushups and situps and stuff) and be on a high protein diet (to tone up). I really dont want to get too much BIGGER...just toned. Is there anything else i should be doing/eating/avoiding? Thanks i would really appreciate any suggestions or advice. :hmmm:

Well then you would be cutting, I thought the recommended amount of time for cardio would be 45 minutes, but I suppose you could start on 20 and work yourself up to 45 if you're unfit. The main thing is to watch what you eat, maybe if you post your diet in the Diet/Nutrition section people could analyse it. Also rather then every second day it would be better to do it everyday, with Sunday off.

You can't tone. Just lose bodyfat. Don't do push ups and things like that, lift weights. If you don't lift weights you will get weaker. Try carb cycling with diet. You should try HITT cardio too, it's much faster.

Hummm well all that sounds good except well i dont know exactly what that means. Whats carb cycling? HITT Cardio?

Yea well the most i think i can run is like 30 minutes...but i'll try to work my way up. So should i not take the extra protein after my weight lifting workouts?

Would whey protein do anything after a 30-45 minute run? :bulb:

Don't do 45 minutes of cardio if you want to keep muscle...protein won't make you "tone" and if you're doing excessive cardio, you will need carbohydrates. Pushups and situps won't take you far because you can't apply the overload principle (increase demands) of the workout in a progressively anaerobic way...

Carb cycling HITT cardio is basically when you sprint as hard as you can for a few minutes, then you walk for a few and thn run again. Do that as long as you can. You can do that with any cardio exercise. I don't have a link to a detailed description, but I'm sure someone does.

Ok. I c now.

Thanks for the advice.

So what exactly does whey protein do for the body? I hear about these high protein diets and shakes all the time. I know protein builds muscle, but as far as dieting and/or high protein intake + workout.... whats better? :hmmm:

Wrong: protein does not build muscle. Aminos are a very significant part of hypertrophy, but without proper stimulus and recovery, they will do nothing in terms of the musculature.

If you plan on doing exorbitant amounts of cardio, I'd recommend carbohydrates to fuel your workouts and protein to minimize muscle loss (although that, in itself, probably won't do it).
