Canned Tuna Question.

I've always gotten the Tuna in Spring Water, but have recently become aware of the importance of Omega fatty acids. So my question is this:

Wouldn't it be better for us to buy canned Tuna packed in Olive Oil - mostly for the purpose of eating it straight from the can?

Interestingly, according to Blue fin tuna from supermarkets , Blue Fin Tuna has 1,600mg of omega-3/100g. Can anyone confirm or deny this by looking at a can of Blue Fin Tuna? I don't eat the stuff so I have no idea.
 
Tuna has mercury in it. I love it but you really shouldn't be eating more then 5 cans a week. antioxidents come from your veggies for the most part. omega 3's from fish oil I take like 15 caps a day.
 
Doesn't the organic mercury content of tuna vary a lot with the breed of tuna and where the fish live? Ditto for PCB & dioxin content.

Canned tuna will not have the ammount you should be taking in. Look at the fat content on the can.
 
flaxseed oil is safer and costs less with all the same benefits of fish oils.

Except that some men don't convert alpha-linolenic acid into docosahexaenoic acid.

For women, flaxseed oil is fine. See Conversion of alpha-linolenic acid to eicosapentaenoic, docosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in young women

For men, flaxseed oil is not quite so fine. See Eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids are the principal products of alpha-linolenic acid metabolism in young men

For male babies, flaxseed oil is somewhat fine. See Entrez PubMed

Canned salmon is good for DHA/EPA.
 
Omega-3 fatty acids, a fat your body can't make on its own i.e. only obtainable from your diet. In most situations it's very good for you.
 
What's DHA/EPA ? :confused:

EPA is EicosaPentaenoic Acid, a 20-carbon fatty acid with 5 unsaturated bonds, the last one being 3 from the end. DHA is DocosaHexaenoic Acid, a 22-carbon fatty acid with 6 unsaturated bonds, the last one being 3 from the end. See below for a diagram showing the omega-6 and omega-3 pathways:-

Thanks for the diagram, unfortunately I couldn't read most of it - tongue got all tyed up

I also noted for the first time yesterday, when the wife brought home my request for canned Albacore tuna - there was a heart shape on the label (seems to be a trend now-days) and a note that it contain "Omega-3" fatty acids. I believe it was Starkist but I know it came from Wal-mart.
