There are many types of back problems, and they should evaluate you to find out what type of injury you have. I've got a bad back, but I can weightlift without problems (Most exercises). But I know running or playing basketball would screw me. So, ask a doctor. And BTW, the second you feel discomfort in your back(or any joint, really) while doing something, stop. You'd regret it if you didn't.
