That's right JD Salinger, the man who penned Holden Caulfield into existence died. Not like we'll really miss him since he's virtually been dead since he went into exile. Maybe now some new stuff may come out but I'm not holding my breath. You know he probably put a stipulation in his will to never release any of his later writings....

i hated catcher in the rye. hated it. i may have to try and reread it to see if it was me, but im not holding out hope

It wasn't you, the book fucking sucked!

the book certainly didnt suck, but it isnt the end all be all that it is considered.

Ok, the book fucking sucked, to me!
The only other books I was forced to read that sucked worse was Great Expectations, and the Grapes of Wraith.

I thought it was OK. But I hate when people label certain books as "great milestones in literature" and think of them as a concrete standard carved into history. Who fucking makes those decisions?

It's the same thing as people giving me shit for not liking Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones. All that shit is filtered through personal biases, and that is fine, but people just need to realize that.

I remember my English teacher senior year of high school, he had us read CITR, and he preached his personal opinion of the book as dogma, and he wasn't even aware he was doing it.

The fucking guy told me my interpretation of some part of the book was wrong, and then said what the character was "really motivated by". It was so sad seeing this guy teach.

I have a doubt even the writer knew his own meaning when he wrote it. Stories often just come out of the darkest parts of the mind and the author may not even know what he/she meant until years later.

Half of high school and college English is just horse shit because the teachers effect so much of the material with their own opinion. They have a lot of trouble taking themselves out of the literature.

end of rant! If any of you want to respond and tell me my opinion on English classes is worthless because of all the grammatical errors above, go fuck yourself!! I don't feel like proof reading, I like to type outside the lines.

:scared:

Not on subject either, but has anyone seen my lost cat? short hair, missing eye . . answers to Tiddles

Hahaha, I'm on board with your opinion on this. I had high school nazi english teachers like that. Luckily, I had awesome college it professors who enjoyed creative interpretation.

Even better my professors picked awesome stories. One of my favorites was O'Connor's Good Country People which was about a ugly fat girl who lets a sneaky bible salesman steal her wooden leg.

Come on man, that shit is just funny. I thing I wrote my term paper on that one.

I liked the "Catcher in the Rye."

Although I rarely read fiction, I also read "Grapes of Wrath" and other Steinbeck stuff, and I think Steinbeck was brilliant. His brilliance was in his simplicity. Few can do that.

When I re-read catcher in the Rye after High School, because it was one of few books in the Ship Library while out to sea for 6 months I was able to identify with Holden Caulfield a little more, but the writing isn't spectacular, I think if they want to teach a book in school that was once banned it should be Tropic of Cancer, now I love that book, or in the very least On the Road....

For the record I thought Catcher in the Rye was pretty good, I think it was the only book that year in HS that I didn't use spark notes for.

At high school the Captain studied One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and Fear and Loathing - both contemporary classics.

You can shove Catcher in the Rye up your fisheye.

Not a fan of Catcher in the Rye, but....

....Hearts of Darkness, anyone??
