hey all how goes it? Just registered and this is the deal. I'm on phase 2 of p90x, and so far so good. I've gotten pretty tired of all the push-ups, and today I switched them out for free weights. looked around and threw
this together.

flat bench 3-6 sets pyramided
incline db the same " "
cable crossovers 3-4 sets the same " "
Then I do the shoulders and triceps part of the workout
I want size that's why I dropped the p-ups. I don't want to be in the gym all day, but I want my time there to count.
Also sick of the lunges so I started doing squats, seated leg curls and calf raise on leg and back day. P90 isn't perfect by any stretch but with some modification it works for me.
I joined planet fitness because its convenient. thing is they don't have a flat bench, just a smith machine that I'm not crazy about. The motion is to restrictive. Good for squats but little else. So suggestions would be helpful-for a chest workout that is. thanks in advance.

I also don't like planet fitness. Just not a good facility. I prefer more mainstream gyms like lifetime fitness and places like golds and LA. They just work better for my schedule and training sessions. Mom and pop gyms don't do it for me.

^I finally decided after 15+ years of lifting that I was fed up with gyms! I figured it was time to lift at home. I got a power rack, dumbbells that go to 120pds(wife wouldn't let me spend any more on 130-150pders), bench, Olympic set that I have 480pds for(getting more this Friday) and a power tec multibench system. I just got tired of the commute, the crowds, gas, and gym dues. I realized a home gym is expensive up front, but in the long run it will pay off. Oh yeah I forgot, fu*k planet fitness!

Thanks for replying. I will just make do for now. I joined because my wife has a membership, but she can't always get there. That's the gist of it. They have a good assortment of db's as well as a place to work the parts I care about, you know legs arms back-accept for the chest that is, and that is something I failed to consider. Given that can you suggest something that I might do for a chest work out with dbs and or the smith machine. I don't think its a lost cause.

If you must use the smith: Incline press to upper chest (near neck). shoulder width. 5x5s 30 second rest between sets. Dumbbell decline flyes 5x5s 30 second rest. This is what I use at the moment and I like it. Good luck. Look up 5x5s on the net.....lots of info. For a change-up after some time; The other guys here can give you some routines.

Just a quick question. Some folks say not to allow your elbows to go below parallel with your back when benching because of potential rotator cuff issues. Is there any validity to this.

Just keep your elbows in, not flared out. You'll be fine.

What I like to do is mix it up. Have a routine but vary things.
Also, I watch pros on youtube. I search their names and whatever muscle group I'm heading out to do.
Inspiring, but I get a lot from seeing things like their range of motion (ROM). I figure they've been doing it so many years that it's muscle memory. Therefore, I'm seeing how they actually perform the movements.

Diet and nutrition will get you the size you want bro. It's really the best thing you can do for your body. Make sure you are eating enough and always do the proper amount of macro calculation for anything that you do. This is really a good thing for you. Make sure you keep your workouts intense and always supplement properly and you will reach your goals.
