Just read an interesting post in training forum and it got me thinking so I thought I would post new thread. A member stated that they cut their coffee intake and noticed improvement in their recovery time.

I am a heavy coffee drinker, I think, (8-10 cups/day). I get after it pretty hard in the gym, currently using gopro's P/RR/S and FD/FS programs. My DOMS as of late have been pretty bad. Soreness to the point where I have trouble sleeping some nights.

I googled for information on coffee and recovery time and came up with zilch! Does anyone have any input on this?

Only personal experience as a coffee addict and a little bit of information I could find.

Basically, if a stimulant doesn't affect your sleep, it doesn't affect your recovery time. This is debatable, since there hasn't been any studies correlating muscular recovery while consuming OTC stimulants. My observation is strickly personal.

I'll go on to say that the lack of caffeine in my daily life would cause extreme productivity loss at both work and the gym.

8-10 cups/day? Damn..that is a lot. I hope you drink enough water.

Matter of fact I do. I take a gallon milk jug to work everyday full of water and drink about half of it at work, fill it up and take it to the gym with me where I drink about 3/4 of it while lifting.

Probably why I spend so much time in the john.

Could you be referring to my post from earlier today?

If so, I was told by someone that competes in triathalons that caffeine constricts muscle cells and doesn't let the cells absorb the water necessary to flush the bad stuff. Hence recovery time should be improved and during your workout the 'burn' should be delayed allowing you to do more work.

Now this person is not any kind of medical professional and I only met this person once. I have no idea if this is true or not.

But, looking for all the help I can get, I gave it a try.
I previously drank approx. 48oz. of black coffee a day.
I quit cold turkey and noticed benefits immediately.
This was about one year ago.
As I may have stated, I'm 47 and not athletically gifted.
A younger more athletic person may have different results.

Now I did notice a drop in energy late in the day and I improved this through diet and improved caloric timing (thank you Tom Venuto).

I am currently at a point where I need to really ramp up my training.
This led me to this site and others, where people stated a good cup of black coffee pre-workout helped them perform.
I have been doing this off and on for the past month and yes I see improvements in my workouts.

Good luck
