Just wanted some of your opinions on whether this is effective or not.

https://btguard.com/

To a degree... but I would use the VPN service. Its still not truly or completely anonymous though. so I would use and onion router like TOR or something to mix up your IP before it gets to this site. BTW...I'm a "geek" not a Nerd. There is a difference...lol

The problem with TOR, and the like, is bandwidth. With BT Guard, I've hit speeds of 4.5Mbs down. Good luck getting that through TOR.

Hide my ass is the popular one I believe.

One thing to remember, with this and most, if not all, that claim this, they are still just as vulnerable to a court order or the Government as the rest of us. 1 court order and they will turn your info right on over.

For people recommending TOR, don't forget that it's being routed through other people running this software. That means that at an endpoint, any unencrypted traffic can be read on its way out by whomever is running that endpoint whether it's your neighbor, some guy in the UK, or a honeypot being run by one of the media companies.

Regarding the VPN, make sure it's a reputable company. While you're connected, all of your traffic should be being routed through that company - I would not do any kind of sensitive transactions ( banking, ecommerce ) while logged into one of these VPNs. Although HTTPS *should* protect you during those transactions, there's no reason to expose yourself to potential MITM attacks. Also, depending on how the client is set up, make sure you're not running a split-tunnel where only some of your traffic goes through the VPN. I'd be surprised if you ran into that ( it's generally a corporate network thing ), however it's something to be aware of - it would defeat the point if your torrented traffic wasn't going over the VPN.

I will agree with most of that.... TOR is a double edged sword... unless your running a virtual firewall with something like Vbox, its not as secure as people think, and it does have bandwidth issues (slow as shit sometime) and unless your encrypting your data stream it's vulnerable at the exit node. However if all your doing is dl'ng Torrent files and the like then its usable and reasonably secure. Especially if you set a random node rotation up. As for honey pots....CIA/NSA/Justice department/ FBI/mossad/Disney....and of those guys who might want to peek at your junk..... its possible but not that probable that they would spend those resources to catch a file sharer... unless your doing some real volume, then the Time-warner gestapo goons might spook ya.

Best way to defeat this is an Anonymous VPN, and Danzik17 is correct in that you first must do your research and find a reputable VPN outside the country. HMS is great but its still subject to court orders. And when you do find the VPN you plan to use make sure you make payment with an anonymous method....A VPN is only totally anonymous if there is no personal data attached to the account. SO don't whip out your credit card and pay for the service because you will just defeat the purpose. There are several VPN services that are very good and secure..... been looking at a few in Switzerland and Iceland, but there are about 4 or 5 I like around the planet. I been looking at creating a VPN chain myself but thats for another discussion altogether. Another good idea is a Torrent Manager that monitors your security while downloading. If your connection becomes unsecure for what ever reason it immediately stops the transfer.
