Did anyone catch the season premier of the Contender last night? It was a two hour special, two fights. In the first match the overall first pick got clobbered by the very last pick. In the second match it was an all out slugfest. After following TUF for the past few seasons it made me realize one thing: I don't like boxing nearly as much as I used to. There was absolutely zero skill demonstrated last night in the 2 fights. They were all out slugfests with no strategy. The worst part was the piss poor instruction they were getting in the corner between rounds. And where is Sylvester?

I think he was filming rocky when this was being taped. yeah your right though . they looked like two kids trying to fight . I dont know why but i knew k9 was gonna win the first fight .

Yeah these guys aren't seasoned at all. It doesn't look like they're getting much direction in their corners either, unless they're not filming it. A lot of these guys are tough bastards though, as they come from difficult backgrounds. I was happy K9 won cause that other dude Clark or whatever was being kinda cocky. The one thing I don't like about this show is the way how they film the fights. They show like 30 seconds of each round and you know pretty much exactly when and who is going to start landing shots when they show the families or corners screaming, sort of like Rocky. I wish they would do it like TUF and have no crowd or at least stick to standard cameras when taping it.

I guess thats why sly is the exec producer . they saw success in rocky so hey why not screw with a reality show

Another thing that bothers me is the cheesy dramatic music playing during the fights. I felt like I should be watching a documentary on Animal Planet instead of a boxing match.

I wanted K9 to win as well. I didn't think he would until they stood face to face. K9 looked to be a few weight classes higher than Clark. He flat out overpowered him.

his blocking was ridiculous though . there was no bobbing and weaving . he just leaning back and sticking his hand out . I guarantee he is used to being the one who is big and intimdating so he has relied on that his entire life . but then you put him with someone who will hit back and he doesnt know what to do . teh music is stupid though . just a little over edited .

YES. I FUCKING HATE THAT SHIT. Like its some epic discovery.

I watched the first season and found it entertaining, but I missed this premier. I didnt know sly wasnt in it, but now that I know, I wont look forward to it.

I saw the K9 fight and the whole camera thing really pisses me off and makes the show hard to watch

I really hate how they film and edit the fights for The Contender. Supposedly it is dramatic for non-boxing fans, whom the show was aimed for in season 1 when it was on NBC. But now that The Contender is on ESPN, they should do away with that. It would be great if they could show the entire unedited fights without the crappy music and fake sound effects, but there wouldn't be enough time for that.

The only fight I had seen from Cornelius "K9" Bundrage was his fight with Sechal (sp?) Powell. During the Contender episode, he was complaining about how he was picked last for teams, but if you saw this fight, you would totally understand why. In this fight both fighters came out quick and knocked each other down with one punch (DOUBLE KNOCKDOWN!), then they both hopped up and I believe Powell got the next shot and knocked Bundrage out with the second punch... it was very amatuer. The fight was on Showtime so I'm sure every one of those boxers, being pro, caught that one.

The Contender is more along the lines of a traditional reality show. A bunch of no talent hacks getting their moment in the sun. Sergio Mora (season 1 winner) is not a contender for anything, he's just a TV personality created by Stallone, that happens to also be a boxer. The show is a drama, not a sports show, right down to the cheesy music.

I think the way they promoted it was too see what life was like in a boxers family .

Then I'm kinda disapointed ESPN even bothered with it. It should be on "The Ocho".
