I am considering setting up a small home gym in my basement to train my clients out of, space is definately not an obstacle.
Has anyone here set up their own home gym?
I'm trying to get an idea of cost to set something of this nature up and unforseen obstacles I may encounter.
Basically any info of any kind at this point in time would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers. :thumb:

go to elitefts.com and click on specials. the usaully have a power rack that is at a decent deal and great quality. you can get a bench and weight set there too. that is pretty much all you need.

shipping will kill ya though.

Thats what i started with and some adjustable db's. Then it just grew from there.

Play it again sports

Do they have Sam's Club that far North? Even though it's a Weider, I got a really great power rack set up from Sam's. It's got the cage, but also has an attached pully assembly for lat pull downs and low rows. It also came with an adjustable bench that has a leg extension and leg curl attachment and an olympic bar with 170 lbs of plates. All for the low low price of about $400. I've since added more plates. Also, my loving wife gave me a set of Power Block Dumbells. They only go to 85 lbs. but when I save enough pennies I'll get the add-on weights.

Don't let Albob fool you, he lifts Flinstone style.

Like Albob I spent around $400 on a Sams Weider bench (not the same type) which came with the bar and weights but mine came with around 300 pounds of weights, then I bought olympic dumbell bars with super strong lockdown collars, then I added a dip/pullup station, bought more 45 plates, some 10 plates for the DB's and added weights as necessary, then I got lucky and a friend gave me his weights adding more to my gym, then I got some really cheap hex DB's at a garage sale.

My latest addition was a Proform Crossover Elliptical that doubles as a cable machine up to 240 pounds expandable to 340 with an upgrade great space saver and multi function machine for $1100.00 and 3 years service. Something you might want if you're using it to train clients.

Oh and buy rubber mats. I like to dump my DB's when I go to failure and the mats come in handy, but there are those times when a 45 slips. I bought some cheap ones and had to double them up to get and good cusion.

Sweet.
Thanks for all the great info, keep it coming!
After coming up with this brainstorm this morning I went to Fitness Depot here in BC this afternoon (never one to procrastinate! lol) and priced out a lot of thier stuff, then went on to check out flooring and mirrors too!
I've already got some equipment and think by throwing in some other good pieces I can get a really good set up going.
I'm getting pretty stoked about this and already have in mind the layout. :hot:
My poor husband... last month it was 'hey honey we're getting a couple of greyhounds', today it's gonna be 'oh and by the way I'm putting in a home gym!'

I'm not sure what the other equipment looks like that the guys have, but I definitely recommend getting stuff that looks quality if you are going to be training people there. As well as stuff that will last the long run and be strong so you dont have to worry about any equipment malfunction injuring your cients.

I use Nautilus. Its pretty pricey, but its not so bad... and I've always thought it was worth the investment.

Actually one of the pieces I am thinking of getting is a Nautilus.

I was told this was probably one of the best pieces of multi gym out there.

Its looks really nice.

I've always been impressed with their quality.

why a home gym set? I dont get why people lift at home if there is a gym you can go too unless it's over 20 minutes away.

fuck that. if i could I would train in a garage. i hate going to the gym. all i need is a rack, a platform and some bumper plates and I could just train forever.

I began working out at home about six months ago.. I'll never join another gym. I love it. Only thing I miss is the leg press, and to make up for that I go to a buddy's gym every couple weeks.

So I can train clients out of it, I have a ton of potential clients who are A) already members at other gyms and don't want to pay a drop in fees to the gym I train out of on top of my fees, they have all said they would gladly come to my house to train. B) I train/work out at a co-ed gym lots of ladies don't want to go to co-ed gyms C) the money I bring in will be mine, why pay a gym owner a large chunk of money when I don't need to D) work hours to suit my clients needs not as dictated by gym hours - just a few reasons.

Good luck Kerry. You seem to have what it takes to make a go of this. And that link you put up shows that you're willing to spend a buck to make a buck. I agree with Eggs that if one is going to create a home gym for the purpose of training others, quality equipment is a must.

 I'm sure I could get transferred out your way. :hehe:

I could be plenty happy training at home with just an adjustable bench (to decline, flat, incline) and an array of dumbbells.

Looks like you've got a good thing going there Kerry :thumb:

I personally like the vibe of the gym and wouldn't like it as much working out at home. Except when I feel out of shape, then I'd take the basement over the gym any day. When I start getting some money in and settle down I want a decently equipped home gym with some dumbells and cardio equipment (dream would be treadmill, elliptical and bike). Justin already has that awesome Nautilus set, so we can use that too :p Yeah, I just want Eggs for his gym equipment :p  :D

that's how i started. It got pretty spendy the stronger i got. I had about
$2500 worth of equipment and had to sell it all when i joined the coast guard
because i couldn't afford storage for when i lived on the ship. I got $1900 for
the setup so i know weights hold their value pretty good.

Yeah and that's another thing; as soon as my networth hits two millions I'm moving to Hawai`i, so I won't be able to take anything with me... so it really depends on when I'll be rich as to if it's worth buying it now for the use I'll get out of it
