im wanting to start up deadlifts and havent done them before. how much weight should i use and was is the proper form? i injured my lower back a few weeks ago but im feeling much better. i just dont want to start using to much weight.
 
What kind of injury exactly, if it were a disc problem for instance you should get it fixed if it is possible, otherwise you will just hurt yourself worse.

Proper form is quite easy and natural to me, you look ahead, squat down and pick up the bar. Just like picking up a box off the ground minus the bending over that MOST people do. The only bending over you do should be because of your knees being in the way. There is also the stiff legged deadlift if you dont bend the knees. I use pretty much identical weight for both.
 
i think it is a disc problem, either that or i tore a muscle real bad.
 
If you tore a muscle a break is definately in order, it is certainly not detached I'd think or you'd really be in trouble, a bad tear though should make it so that you can't basically move anything that aggrivates the area like raising an arm etc

If it were a disc problem though that is serious and needs some therapy to fix, if you heavy deadlift on it IMO you will just make the rest of your life much worse, that is almost a fear of mine but so far so good.

Make those abs wicked strong so you dont fold in half doing squats or deadlift movements, because that is asking for trouble. Keep your head up to keep the spine in proper alignment so a disc doesn't get pushed out.
 
well, as of this moment, i feel great, my back doesnt hurt and i can stretch around. what do you think i should do? should i go to the doctor or just let time do its thing and just take it easy?
 
If it was a few weeks ago and you are fine already then I would not think it was something serious at all, however I would never ever tell anyone "dont go to the doctor."

That is your decision to make.

It is considered basic for building mass.
(Bench press, squats and deads!)
 
I feel I use pretty light weight w/ Deads (115-135) but I keep getting sciatica when I go heavier. I feel like my form is good, I look straight ahead and try not to bend my back but it still happens.
 
If you are concerned about a spinal disk injury, consult a physician about it. Speaking from experience with these problems, some disk injuries require surgery while others require rest and physical therapy--I have been treated with both of these methods.

With that out of the way, deadlifts are great for developing overall mass.

About as basic and "hardcore" as you can get, great for hitting the erectors, IMO thats primarily what its for the rest of my workout is rows and pullups.

Speaking of torn muscles I think I may have torn my left tricep. That was almost a week ago and it's still sore, I did my other work outs without any problems but tommorow is chest and tris again, I know I was gonna hold off direct tricep work but would it be wise to take a few days off and not even do chest (since triceps also come into play with a majority of chest exercises)?
 
It comes into play with any pressing or extention movement with the upper body, that is your arm extensor.

If it completely seperated itself you would be in intense pain and it should be quite obvious visibly. I have been sore for a week at a time before though muscularly but that can be normal, so unless you hurt badly every time you walk or move your arm I would not think it too abnormal, but you have to judge that.
 
I like to do my deadlifts every other week. I feel like I can get more out of it. My recovery time is longer.
 
I do Stiff legged dead lifts for my Hams and lower back. I can only do them every 9-11 days though. I am still sore 1 week later!! that's 7 complete days!! Am I doing something wrong? I could do them again at the 1 week mark, but they'd still be a little sore. Is this ok or should I wait for total recovery? Thanks for the help!
 
If your lower backis soer then I would definetly waite until you are fully recovered before doing them again........Make sure your form is really good...........make sure as your are bending over your back is flat, you are maintaing a good lordotic curve and go down as far as your flexability allows you to......going further will lead to a rounded back and problems with your lumbar vertabrae....you should really be feeling this exercises pull your hamstrings tight............be careful the proper biomechanics of this exercise is hip extension NOT trunk flexion.
 
if this makes sense to you pull from you hams during the movement. do not lean over ... kick you ass up. make sense?

you know you are doing it right when your hams feel like them are ripping off the bone...
 
Makes total sense Solid. Stick your ass way out and come down low. Keeping your back ridged but never "pullling" with it. I love the burn!
 
i was messin around with it.. doin light weight just to get the form and feel of it.. but where do u guys get the burn? my friends got in their lower backs? is that good? bad?.
 
inevitably you're gonna feel it in your back. The trick is to keep your back straight and solid from start to finish. When you're coming up do not flex your back. Does that make sense? Don't flex it, ujst keep it solid and sturdy through the entire range of motion.
 
SLDs are also a highly advanced exercise and as a beginner or newbie to weight training i'd stay away from them until I was really conditioned and strong , also flexibility plays an important role within the deadlift movement , if you aren,t flexibile in the hip (and lower back) area - just remember dead's are a hip dominant movement !!! think long and strong !!!!
 
I go to the floor with SLDLs I dont use a platform, I have in the past but I think the movement could be very bad for spinal discs so I'd rather not chance it. Touch the plates to the floor and thats it for me.
 
I just don't feel a good pull at the bottom just going to the floor. I feel alot better being elevated about 5-6 inches. I do make sure that I don't arcl my back though, especially at the bottom of he movement. I tend to go lower when I'm doing SLDL's focusing on the Hams, but also tend to stop just short of fully erect when coming back up. Then when doing SLDL's focusing on the back, I don't come down as low but, when I come up I come up just a hair past fully erect. So I get a good squeeze at the top. Is this bad practice?
