Can someone explain to me exactly what a deadlift is and how to do it with a barbell and with dumbells? I'm afraid I might hurt myself trying it out.

GOOD FOR YOU! It's important to know when to ask for help

I don't have the link off hand but within the shoulders and back thread in this forum (training) I think it's Prince that gives reference to a great site (gymamerica.com) that will show you the correct way to do them. Also, you can check out www.workout.com for a comparison.

GOOD LUCK.

I read that deadlifts work the lower back and the thighs....aren't you better off just doing good mornings?

I saw the pictures of doing a deadlift on the net and was wondering if it was just taking the stance of squatting, and when you squat down, grab the bar off the ground, and stand up straight, straightening your back the same time your legs...sound right??

Thats prety much it, start light and remember to always keep your head up and your back straight.

Busta,
Here is a tip someone told me once that really helped me. The inside of your elbows should be touching the ousides of your knees when plates are touching the floor. This is a good way to judge if you are bending your knees too much or not enough.

Deadlifts Muscles Target

Good Mornings Muscles Target

You could do just good mornings but Deadlifts as you can see work many more muscles.

Where are you supposed to feel the strain at? Also, should it be done on leg or back day? Will it help me gain overall mass like squats?

You do them on back day and make sure you spread your back and leg day apart because you will also feel a strain in your hams. Also remember to pull with your upper body and not your arms. Just as squats will add mass to your legs this will add mass to your upper body.

People seem to be doing so much weight with deadlifts. If it is all on the lower back, isn't it VERY easy to get injured?

Its easy to get injured doing any movement but if you start light, work on form for at least the first month and then start upping your weight.

What ever you do dont deadlift and then try squats the next lifting day. BAD!

BusTa, Are you always so negative? You should be able to deadlift more than you can sqaut, and you should be able to squat more than you can bench. To question is good, but you also need to learn to listen.

BusTa,
I just read my post from the 30th and I would like to apologize, what a grump!

I put my arms inside my legs...

Mighty, Sumo style, never tried them but should.

With Sumo style it is just the opposite, the outside of your elbows should touch the inside of your knees.
