If I am using the same muscle group on an off day for lighter exercise (not lifting) am i getting a full recovery?

Example: I did a solid shoulder / back work out on tuesday and on wednesday I had team paddling. I was still very sore when I paddled. Obviously after I warmed up a bit the soreness faded but did I stop the rest period and do I take another day to recover now?

(Team Canoe Paddling is a light to medium workout on the same muscle group just for informations sake.)

I looked in the member articles for info on this.

Thanks in advance.

interesting question . . I guess it's like doing cardio after leg day. The answer would be no, but there would be a trade off. Diet and anabolics would be contributing factors.

rest is subjective...you have to look at it in terms of intensity and how taxing an activity or exercise is on the CNS. the CNS takes longer to recover from high intensity exercise than does skeletal muscle. to one person a rest day might be doing HIIT cardio for 18min and another rest is literally sitting all day on the couch.

My definition of "rest" is a period of inactivity or very light exercise.

I consider myself fully rested (recovered) once I feel absolutely 100% - with no aches or signs of fatigue - usually after 4-6 days.

In an ideal world I guess you'd get rid of the paddling... but if it's what you enjoy then I deffinately wouldn't give it up.

The amount of rest all depends on what your goals are.

Just my opinion.

Rest = Sit on the sofa and eat copious amounts of dead animal.

Rested = Mentally and physically refreshed following a period of doing nothing but sitting on the sofa eating copious amounts of dead animal.
