Just after some advice really!!! I've been a member of a gym for 6 months now. My visits have mostly consisted of CV workouts. I now wanna start building. However, I am diabetic (Type 1, needing 4 injections a day!) Should I start Body Building??? Ive heard alot of shit about insulin being the most potent anabolic hormone and its abuse within the bb world.

I just dont know if its a sensible thing to start building bulk

Any thoughts?

no reason why you can't. i have alot of bb diabetics, both type I and I.5 In fact, between cardio and body building they keep their hga1cs in much better control than their non excercising, BB counterparts. As you already know, just be careful hypoglycemia which you already know how to avoid. Just curious, what type of insulin are you using, Lantus, humulog combo, novolog, 70/30 etc.

Im based in the UK, and im using a soluble insulin called Humilin S - Fast Acting (three times daily) and Humulin I - Slow Acting (once a day)

Since the post I've had a PT session and 3 further visits to my gym and I notice the difference already :D

Think I'm becoming hooked!

I think you really should get a medical doctors opinion first. If he thinks it is ok,
then have him refer you to a licensed dietitcian. Can you imagine what would happen if your blood sugar dropped drastically while doing squats/bench press/barbell presses??

Be carefull and safe.
 
Most diabetics I know have a fairly good sense of their blood sugar levels...especialy when they are low....make sure to keep some glucose tabs with you at all times...especially in the gym. Let the manager of the gym know your condition so he knows what to look out for just in case if you are worried.

Of course most diabetics know how to adjust the timing of their fast shots depending on their food consumption and activity levels. Make sure you eat before you inject and just use common sense.

Working out is the best thing you can be doing for yourself....dont be afraid of it...just be smart as I am sure you are.

diabetic here...

i usually check my blood sugar before and after and have not really had a problem with hypoglycima. Like Chiro said...gaining a better sense of your blood sugar level is something every diabetic should do. i usually know when its too high or too low. im type II though and since ive started weight training in april, ive been able to come off of my glyberide and im looking for good news in sept when i see my dr again...maybe i can come off my glucophage....keep up the good work!!! :thumb:
