i have sth like this

underhand-chin-up-20s-workout-07102011.jpg

do you think these are more like chins or pullups? and they hit lats or biceps harder? and do you think thumbless grip could be good on them?

The gym where I train (Pure), has those same bars on all the cable machines. I use those same grips (a semi-supinated grip) because they're easier on my joints.

They hit both biceps and lats on me, similar to a close-grip pulldown. I'd say they're closer to a chinup, but without all the elbow stress from fully supinating your grip. Thumbless is fine, but some of the grips on the bars have loosened up a bit and twist under my hands, so I use a normal grip.

so basically they have got all benefits of chinups but also are easier on wrists and elbows

Good stuff :winkfinger:

My gym has these also

Not so much easier on the wrists, but definitely easier on the elbows and especially easier on the shoulders. Doing chinups or pullups correctly (chest to the bar) really puts my shoulders in a bad spot, especially if I'm a bit pumped up from previous sets. That grip really helps limit the 'pinching' I get at the top.

These are more of chin ups. Considering the fact it is a pulling movement, it is a back exercise. During any pulling movement, the back IS the agonist(main muscle worked) and the bicep is the synergist(secondary/assistant muscle) if done properly. But, this supinated/neutral grip will hit the bis harder than a regular pull up. And as far as the thumbless grip goes, in my opinion it really doesn't make a difference unless your grip fails before your back fatigues.

Ha, look at his crooked ass tattoo. He should have covered that up for his photoshoot.

I find that if I have any sort of tightness in my arms or shoulders, it can make normal chin ups feel pretty damn uncomfortable. I like to rely on standard grip chins, but those are a good alternative. I would still consider that a chin up.
