This is somewhat a venting post. My friends are all exercise science/athletic training majors in undergrad and are entering their 3rd year in their doctorate of physical therapy. They are more academia and don't really train that much in the gym. We constantly get into arguments about certain exercises and steroids. For example we were discussing bicep curls in terms of strength training. They said to get real strong biceps you want to focus on bicep curls. I said compound lifts are better for strength and bicep curls should be used as an accessory lift. They had no idea what a compound lift or accessory lift was. I said focusing on tbar/bent over rows and weighted pull ups with some bicep isolation is better for strength than just bicep curls. Again we are talking about strength training not body building. I said the extra release of hormones from your compound lifts will help your biceps. On your compound lifts obviously you will be able to increase weight more often than isloating small muscle groups, which will increase the stress and effort required of your biceps greater. Now for another example. I was doing dumbell shoulder press (something I rarely do) I was using 70lb weights in each arm (nothing amazing). They had no problem with my form but they said doing that much weight on shoulder press is idiotic. Then I was doing working sets with 425 lbs on deadlift ( not amazing considering i weigh 220lbs). They tried to tell me my form was incorrect. I have been deadlifting for 2 years now never experienced any sort of back, hamstring, or lower abdominal pain. They then demonstrated there form the guy was 215lbs and only could DL 200 lbs. He didn't use his legs at all and rounded his back and put all of the stress on the lumbar spine and lower abdomen. I wont even get into the steroid debate here. I never have used them but my brother has who competes at a powerlifting gym. I have done a lot of research and discussed with some of the lifters about their experience. I stopped arguing with them when they didn't know what a Leutimizing Hormone was. They have only academia and no experience. I am a business major who has done a lot of research on training and actually experiences it. Do you ever get tired of "qualified professionals" telling you you are wrong when they don't even train or know common terminology in the lifting world.

proper lifting weight techniques are not learned in academia it is learned in the gym BUT proper training does need a certain level of intellect and logical reasoning + some medical knowledge. that said, there are many areas where there are no right answer and there can be lots of debate because there are many variables that come into play and different people respond differently to certain types of exercises. For example in the question about how to build bigger biceps by doing biceps vs compound my point of view is the following:
Biceps curls and routines build better biceps, however you can be stuck in a plateau, compound exercises will give you the strength and the stimulus that will help cross that plateau. so both are good.
for the case of shoulder presses: i do not believe in heavy weights when working out shoulders for the simple reason that injury is close and waiting for you..... proper form is much better.
deadlifts are really overrated in bodybuilding however they are very good to improve strength, but for bodybuilding purposes there is no need to deadlift till your'e dead. because injuries due to deadlifts are not very pleasant at all.
anyways i ve been in the gym for 35+ years and still learning!
i do have however debates with medical doctors (specialized doctors not your average family doctor) friends about supplements and steroids etc.......a lot of debate! and years of debate..my conclusions where that a lot of articles you read on the net and open to anybody about supplements are bullshit,...although i used to take many whey supplements i recently stopped because i have been medically convinced that they are harmful to your kidneys (especially creatine), and this harm is not going to come in one or two years , but with many years. so my advice is to stop powder supplements completely because they do not help much at all , most of it is placebo effect (psychological) and if you really want to take some you need to take them for short periods like one month then stop for a while. A good nutrition is a far better option.
As far as steroids are concerned :THERE IS NO DOUBT AT ALL that steroids in the long run WILL HURT you when used for bodybuilding purposes, because the dosage used for bodybuilding is in itself an abuse. and once you stop, everything will be lost.
and when i say WILL hurt you , i am talking about long term effects not the short term simple side effects.
trying a cycle or two is probably ok just for curiosity but blood work needs to be done, but going on from cycle to cycle and cruising between cycles that is purely left for pros and will led to health problems for sure. no article or any bullshit research posted on the net will convince me of the opposite....(i have used such articles in my debates as a defense on the overrated harm of steroids) but there are medical books and medical facts and processes here that are studied for years by experts in the field that speak the truth.

I argue all the time and I always win.

What your friends are doing in school has nothing to do with building mass in the gym. No point in arguing with them. Why bother.

Yea. It's just one of those things. Not worth the time or the .0001% increase in cortisol. I hate it when I'm in the gym and somebody says "you should try the...(insert crappy exercise here) to help work the (insert shitty youtube/magazine anatomy lesson here). Depending on my mood, i usually laugh or I'll just flat out disagree. It's like the memes, "takes psyche 101, Diagnoses all of his friends" It just goes with the territory. Just laugh and shrug it off. But I know the alpha in you wants to say something. When I'm around bullshit my alpha starts coming out. Otherwise I'm pretty laid back, calm. I will be talking about this sort of shit on video soon. I'll keep this question in mind.

I have some friends that are premed students. My favorite is the 60g of protein is enough to build muscle lol

^^^^^ protein amounts depend on weight...a 180 lbs bodybuilder needs no more than 80g...this protein thing is truly overrated

There's plenty of research measuring exactly what amount of protein intake produces a positive nitrogen balance. It's far less than what you'll find recommended by most bbers.

For athletes, I believe the amount is approximately 1.2-1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. That puts a 200 lb athlete around 160 grams/day. Of course a bber using aas will require more.

Muscle Gelz Transdermals
IronMag Labs Prohormones
earlier research suggested 0.5 g per kilogram that was 40 years ago when you did not have many companies that manufacture supplements etc..., today they tend to say that you need more due to many reasons that could be commercial reasons and research financed by such companies....but medically speaking the amount of protein needed is much less than advertised ..unless you are on AAS as exphys88 said. Also a diet based on large amounts of protein is very unhealthy.

I've noticed a difference in taking in 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight & 2g. I'll continue to bulk on my 2g ; ]

An increase in calories usually results in weight gain.

I can absolutely tell a difference by increasing protein intake and lowering carbs without increasing calories. Do and think what works for you. I respond much better to increasing protein intake. Oh and i have blood work done at least 2x a year. No kidney issues on 2 gs/ lb of body weight and i take at least 5 gs creatine every single day. No cycling. I guess ill die one day from something but ill guarantee you it wont be from kidney failure due to either of those.

Agree with Captain Napalm: I'd listen to what they have to say, evaluate it against real world experience, use it if it makes sense, discard it if it doesn't - but I wouldn't waste my time arguing (and put that effort into something that is worth doing)...
