Do you want more pump? Train!

No, scientists at the Catholic University of Brasilia cannot yet tell whether bodybuilders who use the methods of the Swiss trainer and coach Patrick Tuor really build more muscle and strength. But they can prove that Tuor's methods lead to more 'pump' than regular strength training. Their article has appeared in Frontiers in Physiology.

Study
On 3 different occasions, the researchers got 12 young men, who have been training with weights for 2-8 years, to train their biceps and triceps.

On one occasion the men trained in a regular way. They used a weight with which, if they were fully recovered, they could just make 10 reps. They made 8 sets to failure per muscle group.

On two other occasions, the men trained according to work out routines designed by the Swiss bodybuilder champion and coach Patrick Tuor. They are intended for bodybuilders who have been training for some time, and for whom regular strength training no longer leads to progression.

Results
The workouts according to the Tuor principles did not increase the concentration of lactic acid in the blood more than the traditional strength training.

Do you want more pump? Train according to Patrick Tuor...

Before and after the workouts, the researchers determined the thickness of the biceps and triceps with scans. They foundout that strength training according to the Tuor principle led to more pump than traditional strength training. The SST-CT approach in particular proved to be effective.

According to exercise scientists, mechanical stress, metabolic stress and muscle damage are the most important growth stimuli that make that strength training leads to muscle growth, but there are also some indications that strength training is more effective if it leads to acute muscle swellings - or pump, as bodybuilders call it. [Med Hypotheses. 2012 Jan;78(1):151-4.] [Eur J Appl Physiol. 2016 Jan;116(1):49-56.] [J Appl Physiol (1985). 2019 Jan 1;126(1):30-43.]

If this theory is correct, then the methods designed by Tuor could be pretty effective.

Conclusion
"Highly trained subjects may benefit from changing their resistance training routines by using the sarcoplasma stimulating training method, as this method may offer a superior muscle thickness stimulus, even with a lower total training volume versus a more traditional approach", summarize the researchers.

"However, the chronic effects of the sarcoplasma stimulating training method on muscle hypertrophy and muscle strength remain to be determined."
