Does screaming help you lift?

Yesterday this guy was screaming on every rep. I have never heard anything like it. I may yelp a little on my last rep because of the pain, but I don't yell or scream. I know another guy who yells very loud on the last few reps. He goes big, but the yelling is obnoxious. Does anyone know if it is scientific that yelling allows you to lift a weight you might fail on if you were silent? Is it like Bruce Lee or something?

Martial arts is the best example I can think of to explain it...

Making those KEE-YAPS teaches breathing regularity
a repetitive exercise used to discipline the mind and body...

and in ancient days was supposed to create the image of fierce warrior
A psychological advantage used to frighten an opponent

In boxing I would teach my kids to exhale loudly through their nose,
loud enough that I could hear them, if I couldn't hear it, I assumed they weren't
breathing and I would sock them

But I don't scream in the gym -

Obviously its a mental thing, it certainly keeps you awake. It also though uses energy and ability to otherwise utilize oxygen better.

Actually, holding your breath to increase intraabdominal pressure helps you lift more, not yelling.

Well, I don't know what it is with these guys then. It is very annoying to have that going on while your lifting. I have to wait for them to finish their set so I can concentrate and not laugh on my lift. There should be a sign at the gym.

SCREAMING & YELLING WHILE LIFTING WILL NOT HELP YOU.

@ my old gym there was a sign, if you are screaming maybe it's too heavy -

My favorite is the Neandrathal fat guys that yell like they are giving birth...and the form is shit and the weight isn't even that heavy...The world champ PL that I know never utters a peep. I think its funny when people grunt really loud. Sometimes I'll point and laugh if its really bad:laugh:

I do it on my last rep of my last set.

Sorry

I don't mind when people make a little noise the last repetition or two. But when people yell out every rep of a 15 rep set of concentration curls, I just want to slap the shit out of them. I just want to say, "Stop pretending like you're intense for the attention. You're not cool. I'm gonna go squat now that your loud ass isn't distracting me. Thanks for understanding."

from my experience guys like that are looking to draw attention to themselves. most of the time they aren't even lifting big weight and they usually have shitty form

My favorite is watching women's tennis and hearing them scream with every whack of the racket. There's just something about making the William's sisters scream. I'll bet it's good for the ratings.

I do not grunt or yell, may have let out 1 or 2 but nothing much.

people pleez dont do it all you do is distract everyone else

I think it is done more out of habbit than anything. Many of them probably don't even know they are doing it. But you have an occasional dick head that wants to draw attention to himself!

I find myself grunting at the end of a really slow rep (not trying to be slow, it's just so close to 100% of my maximum, it moves slowly no matter what haha), and I'll let out a sortof grunt as I exhale. I don't yell or anything, it's kind of like clearing your throat sounds, except one solid sound :blah:

I also fart alot doing SLDL :finger: :D

Haha. I've busted ass doing heavy deadlifts a couple times myself.

Grunting, even odd moaning is acceptable...Within limits...Screaming???? Unless ure being fucked in the showers after the soap slipped or dropped a db on ur foot, I dont see a reason for it!

if I do let out a grunt I try to keep is soft. Normally I don't let anything out. It is a waist of energy in my opinion to scream. Why not use that energy to move the weight?

Good post!! This sums up my thoughts on this subject as well. :clapping:

Try this the next time your in a gym and some fucker is screaming. Walk over with some duct tape in your hand and start unrolling some while standing next to him. See if that works. Now listen if this guy is 300 lbs and going for a 4 rep with 500 lbs on the bench, it may be wise to hide that roll.

Tough Tape
