I used to strip weights on 1-arm cable curl/extensions at the very end of my triceps/bicep workout using supersets. (Stripping is: Do max weight then immediately take off a plate and do another set to failure, repeat until no plates left.) I did this for definition after a mass-directed routine to fully shock and wear out my muscles but a friend of mine recently told me that it actually burns/shrinks the muscle....is there any truth to this? or has anybody gotten good results with this?

it might be beneficial once in awhile, I certainly would not use stripping every work-out.

personally, I have cut out all of these types of principles from my work-outs, I no longer use pyramids, drop sets, super sets, stripping or forced reps.

I am adhering to the prinicple of overload utilizing heavy weight and low reps, no pre exhaustion either. I do a couple of warm-up sets, then I bump up to a moderate weight for one set, then I do 5 heavy sets in the 4-6 rep range.

This is exactly the way I work out also.

how long?

I have only been doing for 3-4 weeks now and I am already seeing strength increases in exercises that I was stagnant in for months. Overall, I like it and I have much more motivation and intensity in my work-outs.

I also do the same thing and I have increased in weight every week for the last 6 weeks and I have gained 19 lbs of muscle!! Works great for me. My friends try higher reps with lighter weight and aren't seeing the results I am. :thumb:

It's been almost a year..............

The draw back that I've found is that I tend to eat allot more. I saw immediate strength increases and every 4-6 weeks I'm able to up the weight I work out with. I found the key to increases is to take it slow.

I agree, and it's crucial to take time off.

are you guys doing this based on AST's Max-OT?

Nope......... A buddy and I were talking about it once and guess what, it works.

Thanks Prince.............I should look at it and see what I can do better at.

Going back to the original question since we never really addressed it.... :)

when you use the stripping techniques all you are doing is causing muscle fatigue, which does not necessarily cause muscle hypertrophy. You must overlaod a muscle if you want to force it to grow, and this is done by utilizing heavy weights and low reps.

I think there are two reasons why people like to use such techniques: one is you usually get a great pump, and two is people think that more is better in terms of volume (more sets), which is not true for gaining size/strength.

Do not mistake a pump for a good work-out, we all love to get a pump and feel our muscles burn, but neither necessitates muscle hypertrophy.

thanks for the help. :)
