How long can you keep eggs before they become unsafe to eat. I bought 5 doz about two weeks ago and am starting to worry they might be becoming unsafe.

They say it's to use eggs within 3 to 5 weeks of the "pack date" that's stamped on the carton, but who knows if that's the real date.

I've also cooked a bunch (either scrambled or hard boiled) and frozen them and then pop them in the microwave as I want them and they keep for a LONG time.

Seriously, don't worry too much about that stuff.

Unless you plan on eating the eggs raw...

Just remember, if you're cooking them conventionally, you'll most likely kill anything harmful.

Hell, and I'm not recommending this, but sometimes I open a pack of chicken and use it throughout the week.. towards the end it might start to get a little funky.. and I still cook it, eat it, and I've never had a problem.

Its not the ideal thing to do, but just remember, 300 years ago, people used to eat ROTTING MEAT, literally, rotting, bacteria infected meat. Why? Because they had to, for survival. They'd overload that shit with strong spices hoping to mask the flavor. But they survived. SO I think using eggs a little past the expiration date, is perfectly acceptable.

Yes, and if they were lucky they lived to 40 years old.

Not to mention we do not have the ability to withstand the horrible infected world they lived in.

Yeah, they didn't live very long, but the dude is asking if eating slightly expired eggs is ok, not green bacteria infected meat.

And actually, we do have the ability to withstand the infected world they lived in, at least many of us do, due to the fact that we are here and ALIVE.
Just like many of us have immunities to the plague.

Thats how biology works :)

Read a book, humans today do not have the immune systems they had in the past.

i buy brown eggs which are local in my area and use them well past 2 weeks old. 5 even 6 weeks is fine. and i like mine over easy. i get mildly sick once a year or so but i doubt it's the eggs. i think if people are too bacteria/germ - aphobic it leads to having a weaker body because your body never gets to fight anything off and get stronger.

Yea and what was teh life expectancy 300 years ago? I just recently saw some governmental report that stated that 80 percent or more of chicken had some degree of salmonella infection.

I don't do chicken after its been sitting in the fridge more than 4 days or 5. op in the freezer or something. I would recommend you cook up the eggs and freeze them.

??? Your body is fighting millions of germs off daily. I agree as far as young children being raised in too sterile of an environment. But why welcome in the chance for something foreign to screw you over, which is what youre suggesting. And eggs over easy is just ick!

Yeah, the life expectancy was much lower, but eating food with less potential risk is only one of the reasons as to why we live much longer now.

Also, Patrick Bateman, when you say past how long ago do you exactly mean?
Its my understanding that humans, like all creatures pass along their genetic traits to their offspring?
For example, 3rd and 4th generation mexican's can go back to Mexico and drink the water, and suffer no ill effects, or at the very least have a much higher threshold for it.
Or how modern european's are in much less danger if exposed to the plague.
Anyways, perhaps you know more about this subject than I do, and I'd love an explanation if you would. :)

I'm not saying that if you took a human and dropped him in the past 1000 years, he'd survive all the viruses, and bacteria... not saying that at all.

But to say that humans today don't have the immune systems that they had in the past..... perhaps not 100% the same, but we have definitely inherited certain things from our ancestors.
But explain otherwise if you can please, I'm curious.

Anyways, this is getting off track now, apologies.

I still say that eating slightly expired eggs (expired by the date on the package) is perfectly acceptable so long as you cook them thoroughly. I do this all the time. Whole eggs I usually cook pretty fast, but sometimes I buy cartons of egg whites, and you're really only supposed to keep those for 1 week max after you open the box... I'm use boxes of that stuff all the time past the expiration date, it doesn't smell funny, or taste weird.. so I keep doing it. I think they may be pasteurized as well...
*shrugs*

Fully agree with you here. I've actually talked with doctors that are of the same mentality/heard researchers and scientists.
They're not screaming that you should go play around in pig shit and have a mudball fight.. but people these days are obsessed with cleanliness and it could actually be doing us harm in the long run..
We're constantly having to come up with new chemicals to fight off bacteria that have become resistant to conventional methods.

they are probably fine, I would hard boil them all and try and eat within 1 week, eggs are very cheap, so if you really are unsure about eating them I would toss them and rather be safe than sorry.

may be you should bring less amount. Even though i seldom eat eggs now. i used to eat a lot of em before. I think 2 weeks is a good estimate of how long the eggs will be good to eat after buying. Also remember they have been on the store shelf may be for a week. Even though circumstances differ i suggest you dont buy more than 2 dozens at a time.

personally, if my eggs are expired, i throw them out. if my chicken smells funky, its in the garbage. same for all meats and cheeses. i take enough risks to know NOT to fuck around with things that could kill me, or make me shit my brains out for days. (note: this has not always been my theory, but multiple hospital visits and many sleepless nights on the crapper have forced me to change my "ah, its still good, the date is a suggestion" theory on food. im not looking to argue anyone elses point, im just saying my experience)

I've kept eggs for quite awhile and never had a problem.

However, eggs are pretty cheap so it might be better to be safe than sorry.

I buy 5 dozen eggs near the beginning of the month and use the whole month to off all 5 dozen. This includes my wife(hard boiled) and my kids(every way an egg can be made). Dont worry too much about it, you will be fine. Keep them refrigerated and do make sure your temps are below 38°F.

Also, dont worry about the color of the egg. There is no difference in nutritional value between brown or white eggs. The color of the egg has to do with the "race" of the parents, nothing more. Brown chickens have brown eggs, white chickens have white eggs. White people have white children, black people have black children. Im still wondering why I have a black kid though. Going to have to talk to my wife about this.:roflmao:

Blame Patrick, he befriends you and then makes his way to your wife, mother in law, sister, Mother and your gay relative. He's a dog.

Got you beat son. I buy 7.5 dozen eggs and go through them in about 2 weeks :)

12 egg whites a day will do that.

yea i recall reading that you throw away all the yolk. I buy egg whites in 32oz containers(about three a month for just me).

Damn you patrick...im going to need that child support. Then again, baby does resemble Merkaba.

I remember when I first moved into my own place i would eat eggs that had been in the fridge for months. Then a few years later it dawned on me that eggs didn't keep forever. I was so used to always having fresh eggs from growing up in a family of five that It never came into play. My mom would buy eggs every week or at least every other week.

danzik17
there is tons of info about the whole egg not being bad for you.. why do you eat egg whites and not the whole egg?

because danzik is ballin so much that he just throws food away. My dad used to give the yolks to our dog when he baked because of all the nutrients. Apparently it helped her coat shine. I havent looked this up.

You don't see any issues eating 16 whole eggs a day? Keep in mind I already eat 4 whole eggs in addition to my whites.
