At school and with very limited budget, I WILL NOT ever get enough cals to grow if I eat all healthy. The only way I will get my cals up high enough is with extra sugar and a bunch of olive oil. Is it better to do this still than to not even grow?

Last semester I gained over 20lbs... there was definately sugar involved, I was NOT eating clean by any means... but I really didn't LOOK noticeably fatter.

What do you guys say?

adding more EVOO to the diet is a great idea. it's definetly a very healthy way to increase cals

If you are trying to add mass and you are finding it difficult then just follow these simple rules:
1. Get your protein
2. get your healthy fats
3. get your fibre and vitamins and minerals
4. ensure you are eating enough carbs at appropriate times for your training

Then fill the rest of your calorie needs as you wish <---**

** -> this means if you need to increase your olive oil intake... Or if you need to add 'calorie dense' foods such as nuts, honey, dried fruits or the odd processed food (aka - take away/pre-packaged food) then, as long as it does not have a lot of HFCS (corn syrup) or trans-fats in it, you should be fine.

Just aim to eat healthy 90% and that other 10% will not really be a major concern.

What if I can't even get 90% healthy though? Last year I found myself pounding down a quart of koolaid many times that I felt "not full"

That is because koolaid is not really going to fill you up in the least! ;)

Ultimately it is up to you what you pick to eat... But I wouldn't do an outright dirty bulk. It is just nasty...

You probably could do 90% healthy... It is not that hard... What exactly are you eating most days?

Thanks, Emma.. I didn't know it was a common abbreviation.

Drew, I often up my calories with Olive Oil too. Even with a limited budget, carb sources such as brown rice and oats can be considered relatively inexpensive. I usually make 2-3 cups of brown rice and throw it in a container and put it in the fridge to nuke later whenever I'm ready to eat. Calories from brown rice seem to add up quick for me. If you have access to a blender, adding in oats is a great way to up calories. And so is adding fruit. But to answer your question specifically, I'd say Olive Oil is good for extra calories, definately better than sugar.

I eat almost ONLY food from on campus, with the exception of whey and evoo basicly. I don't have a way to refridgerate anything. I am very limited while at school. I just drink as much milk and chocolate milk as possible every time i am in the cafeteria to get SOME cals and SOME protein.

If you have a room, you have access to electrical outlets. You can definately get a blender, microwave, mini-fridge and a foreman grill. If it's against the rules, don't let your RAs find out. A lot of times they won't even care since everyone does it anyways. You should have some healthy options in your dining halls, and it looks like you made pretty good gains from your last bulk, so I'd say just try to eat as clean as possible and snatch food from your dining hall for later if you're that concerned about calories. The olive oil is a good idea in my opinion. Do you just slam them down in measured teaspoons/tablespoons?

The blender is the only thing I could have, and I already have friends who have gotten caught for the other stuff on my floor.

You guys can't even have microwaves and mini-fridges? WOW. My freshman year I don't think anyone DIDN'T have these two items in their rooms. The blender will come in handy for you (oats, fruits and cottage cheese).. I guess a foreman grill would be hard to hide (the smell when you cook stuff, plus word of mouth) -- maybe crack open your window and fan out the scent when you cook? Have some air freshener around maybe too, so if anything, your RA will think you're a pothead and they'll never nail you for that. If they try they'll look dumb when they don't find anything.

hayne...eating healthy as a student is almost impossible. especially if you have caf dining dollars. IMO we are young. We can afford to eat like shit for a few years.

We all have friend that live off pizza and beer...literately. I'll bet you eat a lot healthier than most student...besides if you still look good...fuck it

tuna, canned chicken, brown rice that you can cook in the microwave. canned legumes. get yams at the local supermarket..they can keep outside a fridge for a couple days. you can do it. eat uncooked oats with milk, it tastes just like cereal. im in college and this is what i do.

my dining hall has wheat bread and white spaghetti and most of the time white rice. they aren the best but i also eat them. Take advantage of a salad bar or the fruit stands.i even eat some raisin bran in the morning sometimes..not the best carb source but its better than most of the stuff in the dining halls.

Who needs a blender?
Bowl of oats (store in cupboard) + skim milk (long life milk = store in cupboard) + scoop of whey (store in cupboard) + handful of walnuts (store in cupboard) + dried fruit/apple/banana or other fruit (store in cupboard) = meal

You can also keep lots of things in a cupboard or under a bed:
tins of tuna/salmon/chicken (?)
other nuts/seeds
olive oil
powerdered milk/dry milk
canned legumes (eg: chick-peas)
natural muesli/swiss muesli
canned fruit
etc etc...
