Mozilla Firefox launches Collusion, new add-on that enables users to see who is tracking them

The hunters are now the hunted on the Internet.

Mozilla Firefox has launched a new add-on that will enable users to see in real time which advertisers are tracking their movements on the web.

The move seems to be a direct response to Google's controversial, new privacy policy in which it will be easier for the Internet's most powerful company to track users for the purpose of serving up personalized ads.

"Not all tracking is bad," Mozilla writes on its website. "Many services rely on user data to provide relevant content and enhance your online experience. But most tracking happens without users' consent and without their knowledge. That's not okay."

The add-on, called Collusion, doesn't stop sites from tracking users. But it shows an interactive diagram detailing how website visits are tracked by advertising and analytics companies.

Gary Kovacs, CEO of Mozilla, unveiled Collusion last week at the Technology Entertainment and Design Conference in Long Beach, Calif.

According to Wired, Kovacs said the end goal is to eventually launch the add-on on a bigger scale, allowing users to share their information to a database to allow researchers to analyze who's watching whom -and to find better ways to avoid it.

"The memory of the Internet is forever," said Kovacs. "We are being watched. It's now time for us to watch the watchers."
