Is there any real need for someone relatively new to lifting to worry about doing specific exercises for forearms? Mine seem to get a pretty good thrashing on both back day and biceps/triceps day, and seem to be gaining size in proportion to my upper arms. But am I hampering the development of my grip strength by not doing some direct forearm movements?

My opinion is no, you don't need to
do anything but the big basic
movements for the first 6-8 months.
But then, hey what do I know.

You don't need to worry about forearm training for the first few months. After that you'll need to do forearm & grip work in order to be able to handle more poundages.

Remember you'll never have a big body with small forearms

Everyone says that forearm growth and strength comes with other arm exercises but I always throw in some reverse wrist curls at 4X10 for good measure. Trust me, your forearms will swell after these.

I agree with Prince on the straps but don't think it will hurt to do some forearm specific work.

Yep, I'm definately staying away from straps... but I don't want to get to the stage where I may be limited by my grip in the future. I might try a few sets of the reverse curls on arm day.
