Yesterday I went and picked up some Whey Protein powder from GNC. This is the first time I've ever gotten any kind of protein powder.

My questions is, how often, and when, should I drink it? It 130cals and 20g protein per serving. The guy at the store said it should last about a month, and since it has 87 servings I'm guessing I should be drinking about 3 per day.

Edit:
One more thing. Do you think increasing my protein intake (originally 40-50g per day) with this will make a big difference?

I have the same stuff and it does last a month depending on the size you get. I only have it twice a day, one scoop with breakfast and two scoops after a workout, with skim milk. Rest of protein I get from real food.

If you were only eating 40-50g of protein a day then it will make a huge difference. You need at a minimum .75g of protein per lb......1-1.25 is best.

Arggg... You really should have done some research before you bought GNC powder! It is one of the worst you can get in my opinion (both for price and quality!!).

You don't need to take 3 a day - having some PWO in a shake with some carbohyrates (have enough whey for ~ 0.25-0.33 g of protein per pound of your body weight) is all you need.... You can have some before your training session too if you do not have enough time for real food (eg: make yourself another protein and carb shake).

Otherwise real food is much better for you.

But once your GNC tub has run out go and get yourself a good qaulity WPI - it should have ~100-120 cals per 30g serve - with 24-27g protein, <2g of carbs and <2g of fat.

Also - just adding protein may not be beneficial - it depends on the rest of your diet and your training too.

I myself enjoy the GNC 100% Whey Protein... but I also like ON's Whey as well... the only reason I bought the GNC Stuff is because it was Gold Card time and they were already having a buy 1 GNC pro performance product.. get one 50% off so it was a kick-ass deal.. two 6 pound tubs for around $50 made me happy

 It may be cheap but it is not worth it for me if the quality is really bad....

If you just look at the protein per serve (and the protein per calorie intake) stats it is pretty low:
20g in 30g serve = ~66% protein
130 cals for 20g protein = just over 60% protein calories!

A good quality whey will (and should) have ~25-27g protein per 30g serve with ~90% of calories from protein...

go to bulk nutrition then you can get deceant protien at better prices every day, no need to wait for a sale....and yes its cheaper even considering the shipping:thumb:

**but the gnc sale was a bit better you got 12lbs, I can't speak for quality cause I've never been in a gnc but I'd take emma's advice

3 shakes a day is too much IMO.

What is your breakdown of grams of protein per serve (30g)? I'd be interested in trying your product if it is better than sportpharma from Costco and resonably priced.
